Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Raven Chacon will showcase his ambitious, multi-instrumental composition and performance, “Tremble Staves,” at Laguna Gloria on Oct 13 (Fri). The Texas premiere is presented by The Contemporary Austin as part of the upcoming exhibition, “This Land,” opening this fall at the Jones Center. Reflecting on histories of place and the sanctity and scarcity of water, this site-responsive adaptation will be performed at Laguna Gloria on the shore of the Colorado River in partnership with Texas Performing Arts, Fusebox Festival, and The University of Texas at Austin's Butler School of Music Percussion Ensemble. “Tremble Staves” features Bay Area musicians Travis Andrews and Andy Meyerson (The Living Earth Show) and will be accompanied by an original narrative written by Austin-based interdisciplinary artist and writer, Virginia Grise. Admission is free, and tickets will be available to reserve online at 11A on Aug 24 (Thurs) alongside tickets to the opening night of our Fall 2023 exhibitions. Navigating a career as a freelance violin and viola player isn't always a walk in the park. Despite graduating from prestigious music schools and investing two decades in this craft, the reality often diverges from the idealized world of academia and competitions. Is this an uncomfortably frequent truth? Having observed this evolving landscape, marked by growing competition and biases in the classical music industry, it's disheartening to see many talented self-employed violin players feel like victims rather than winners. Notably, Early music departments in conservatories are dwindling, and even renowned teachers sometimes struggle to find students. The more obvious solution would be to simply shut down those departments, since it can be difficult to justify monetarily. And some schools do. But... In response, in 2005, I made a pivotal decision to embrace something radicaly different - the violoncello da spalla. This choice transformed my life, akin to discovering a serene, less-crowded beach after contending for a tiny patch of sand under the sun. I'm excited to offer a complimentary free physical copy of "Da Spalla" until October 31st, because it is a Halloween season. It is not something my family actively celebrates, but it is a good occasion to do something good. What's inside? 1. You'll explore the techniques that allowed me to become stage-ready in just 14 days as a soloist. 2. You'll learn how I elevated my concert fee from €250 to €14,700 – a simple transformation that surprises many, even those in the managerial suite. 3. I'll share invaluable real-life experiences that are rarely taught elsewhere. And, of course, you'll delve into the realms of musicology, repertoire, and the incredible rebirth of the Violoncello da spalla and ultimatelly the main point - music, culture. Best of all, it's available for free, with only shipping charges. This way, I'm not profiting, and you're only covering the cost of delivery – a fair deal for both of us. Don't miss this opportunity to explore a new dimension in music. Get your copy here: 🎃 https://lnkd.in/eNedYJQi

How do you talk to kids about physics without making them cry? You use music. In the Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts (SaPa) in Schools program, we take four musical instruments in the string quartet as an example: Violin, viola, cello, and double bass. First, we ask them to listen to one song played on each of these instruments so that they observe the differences in the sounds they make. Then we discuss the effect that string tension has on the pitch of the instrument. We explain that violinists use rosin on their bow because it creates friction, which is necessary to produce sound. Students study each instrument more closely. In the case of the cello, the strings tend to be longer. This means it tends to produce deeper sounds, since the strings vibrate at a lower frequency. The violin produces the highest-pitched sound because the strings are thinner and shorter. “Thinking like a scientist” and exploring music are not mutually exclusive. A few years ago, we ran a contest to prove that. We asked students from the in-schools program to experiment with questions connecting music and science. How much water do we fill in each glass to make the sounds of the jaltarang sound soothing? How do large stadiums optimise their spaces for concerts? All questions were considered valid and worthy of exploration. STEAM education has become a buzzword today, but if we set aside the jargon, the truth is that the arts are a great way to encourage critical thinking. It’s not about making space in a typical school day to fit in some music; it is about reframing the way we see the world around us. How do you use music in your daily life? I'd love to hear from you. #steameducation #steamlearning #musiceducation

#snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking piano The piano is a keyboard instrument that produces sound when the keys are pressed. Most modern pianos have a row of 88 black and white keys: 52 white keys for the notes of the C major scale (C, D, E, F, G, A, and B) and 36 shorter black keys raised above the white keys and set further back, for sharps and flats. This means that the piano can play 88 different pitches (or "notes"), spanning a range of a bit over seven octaves. The black keys are for the "accidentals" (F♯/G♭, G♯/A♭, A♯/B♭, C♯/D♭, and D♯/E♭), which are needed to play in all twelve keys. There are two main types of piano: the grand piano and the upright piano. The grand piano offers better sound and more precise key control, making it the preferred choice when space and budget allow. The grand piano is also considered a necessity in venues hosting skilled pianists. The upright piano is more commonly used due to its smaller size and lower cost. When a key is pressed, the tightened strings inside are struck by felt-coated wooden hammers. The vibrations are transmitted through a bridge to a soundboard that amplifies the sound by coupling the acoustic energy to the air. When the key is released, a damper stops the string's vibration, ending the sound. Most notes have three strings, except for the bass, which graduates from one to two. Notes can be sustained when the keys are released by the use of pedals at the base of the instrument, which hold the dampers off of the strings. The sustain pedal allows pianists to play movements, such as shifting hands from bass to treble range while sustaining a chord, enabling melodies and arpeggios on top. In the nineteenth century, influenced by Romantic music trends, the fortepiano adopted changes such as using the cast iron frame (which allowed much greater string tensions), and aliquot stringing which gave grand pianos a more powerful sound, a longer sustain, and a richer tone. Later in the century, as the piano became more common, it allowed families to listen to a newly published musical piece by having a family member play a simplified version. The piano is widely employed in classical, jazz, traditional and popular music for solo and ensemble performances, accompaniment, and for composing, songwriting and rehearsals. Despite its weight and cost, the piano's versatility, extensive training of musicians, and widespread availability in venues, schools, and rehearsal spaces have made it a familiar instrument in the Western world.
