The Evolving Language of BIM: Leveling Up Your LO Ever come across these terms: LOD, LOA, LOIN? While some have become outdated, understanding these concepts is still important in BIM [Building Information Modeling]. This post clarifies what they mean and introduces the current preferred terminology. In less than 5 minutes, you'll grasp the core concepts of LOXs! LOD (Level of Detail): This term is still widely used. It refers to the amount of information included in a BIM element. LOA (Level of Accuracy): Consider using Level of Refinement instead. This refers to how closely a BIM element resembles its real-world counterpart. LOD (Level of Definition): Consider using Level of Representation instead. This refers to how a BIM element is graphically represented. LOG (Level of Geometry): This term is less common, but it refers to the geometric complexity of a BIM element. LOI (Level of Information): This broad term encompasses all the data associated with a BIM element. LOD (Level of Development): Similar to LOD, this refers to the stage of completion of a BIM element. LOIN (Level of Information Need): This refers to the amount of information required for a specific project or task. Understanding these concepts ensures clear communication and effective collaboration on BIM projects. #BIM #LevelofDetail #Construction #Architecture #Engineering #TheBIMEngineers

The truth is none of the terms actually help or benefit the process of designing and drawing/modelling a project. In the M&E discipline ’containers’ (or scheme and system schematics and layout drawings in plain english) depict vast collections of ‘assets’ (plant, equipment and linear services and components). A single metric defining the ‘LOx’ of the container is beyond pointless. We already have well defined stages of work each with comprehensive descriptions of purpose and deliverables. What would be much more useful is a mechanism to validate that ‘actors’ actually fulfill those expectations.

LOD (Level of development).

I may have to take the blame for inventing LoX, when we needed to debate these. Unintentionally, it entered the vocabulary. Should it be put in a sack and drowned?

Isn't the LOD Level of Development?
