As a direct support professional (DSP), Lawrence takes pride in the trusted role he has in the lives of people with disabilities. He helps transport people to and from appointments, gives medicine, cooks, cleans, dresses, changes, and feeds people who may not be able to do these things for themselves. He even seeks out specialized training that is needed to support people who have challenging behaviors that may result in injury to themselves and others. It is hard for many DSPs, like Lawrence, to support themselves and their families on these below-average wages. The critical skills required to be a DSP are often overlooked by those making Medicaid funding decisions. This means there are not enough DSPs to help all the people who need care. We need Congress to take action NOW! Take a minute to sign our petition to tell Congress to support the HCBS Relief Act, which will mandate services in Medicaid. https://lnkd.in/e2Cx_s6e #CareCantWait #WeActWednesday

https://lnkd.in/gMZcZaEe "While most long-term care services are paid for through public programs such as Medicaid, people with moderate to high incomes who are not eligible for them must pay for services out of their own pocket or through private insurance—at least until they spend down their savings. A new publication explores the affordability of private pay long-term care in every state and in more than 400 U.S. markets. It finds that private-pay nursing home care is not affordable for middle-income families anywhere. While less costly than nursing homes, home health care is often unaffordable for middle-income elders. The analysis, based on Raising Expectations: A State Scorecard on Long-Term Services and Supports for Older Adults, People with Physical Disabilities, and Family Caregivers, was produced by the AARP Public Policy Institute with support from The SCAN Foundation and The Commonwealth Fund."

Government Programs: Medicaid and Veterans Benefits Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that provides health coverage to millions of Americans, including low-income adults, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. Many states offer programs that allow Medicaid beneficiaries to receive care at home. These programs offer benefits that allow seniors to designate and compensate their in-home caregivers, which can include adult children or spouses. To qualify for Medicaid, seniors must meet specific income criteria or demonstrate medical need. Additionally, Medicaid's Home and Community-Based Services waivers enable seniors to receive in-home care, with payments potentially reallocated from senior living community expenses. For veterans and their families, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers several programs to support caregiving. The Aid and Attendance benefit provides additional financial assistance to veterans and their surviving spouses who require help with daily activities due to age or disability. This benefit can be used to pay family caregivers for their services. Additionally, the Veteran Directed Care program allows veterans to manage their own care and hire family members as caregivers. https://conta.cc/4dRfUad #Inhomecare #Seniorservices #Senio

Good news — the #NEleg Appropriations Committee included funding for #LB1124 and #LB1125, both dealing with home visiting, in their committee amendment to the state budget bill, #LB1412. The bill was advanced with the committee amendment on a 39-3 vote. LB1412 is now on Select File, the second round of debate. Both bills were fully funded as requested by the introducers. LB1124, introduced by State Senator Tony Vargas, was funded at $900K for evidence-based home visiting, and LB1125, introduced by State Senator Anna Wishart, at $500K for evidence-based nurse home visiting utilizing the Medicaid Managed Care Excess Profit Fund. Evidence-based home visiting is voluntary and free to families at risk. Benefits include healthier pregnancies and maternal care, stronger parenting skills and parent-child relationships and better academic and social outcomes for children. 🌟 The Movement Has Begun! 🌟 Did you know that there is a massive shortage of caregivers? 70% of at-home care needs are currently unmet, leaving families to bridge the gap on their own. Meanwhile, the financial burden is heavy, with nursing homes costing over $80,000 annually. This leaves 83% of families struggling to cover the costs or relying on government assistance through Medicaid (high government spend). Many unpaid family caregivers are forced to quit their jobs in order to care for their loved ones. This is simply unsustainable. Paying family & friend caregivers is the key to changing the future of long term care. By supporting these dedicated individuals, we can make a real difference in the lives of those in need, while actually SAVING our government money. Join the movement today and together, we can change the world for the better! 🌎💪 #PaidFamilyFriendCaregivers #LongTermCare #MakeADifference

I help financial professionals and fiduciaries retain assets under advisement by working with them when a client needs long term care.
Unfortunately, there is a dark side of Medicaid, leaving negative impacts on families with elderly members requiring nursing home care. But, we are here to educate you about it so you’re not left in the dark! In a featured article titled "Medicaid's Dark Secret" in The Atlantic, a Massachusetts woman faced a distressing situation when her mother's nursing home costs were covered by Medicaid, resulting in a lien on their family home. Despite taking care of her mother and her husband's dementia, the daughter was later burdened with significant debt due to the state's Medicaid recovery program. This incident showcases how important it is to engage in estate planning and seek guidance from an elder law attorney to safeguard assets, particularly one's home, from potential Medicaid recovery issues. Who Qualifies for Medicaid using a Pooled Income Trust? In New York State, those deemed disabled by either the Social Security Administration or New York State can use a pooled income trust to become eligible for Community Medicaid with Long-Term Care, which covers home care. Many individuals using pooled income trusts for Medicaid qualification were not previously identified as disabled by the Social Security Administration. As a result, they must submit documentation of disability, along with details about the pooled trust, to Medicaid for approval. Get FREE CONSULTATION from our experts! 🚨 URGENT: NY STATE BUDGET MUST PRIORITIZE OLDER ADULTS! 🚨 The NYS budget is over 15 years past-due on providing nursing home Medicaid funding that matches the cost of care. There is a $1.6 billion Medicaid funding gap for nursing home care in NY. Poor Medicaid reimbursement directly impacts homes’ ability to recruit & retain staff – and directly impacts access to quality care for our loved ones. New York’s older adults and families deserve better. It’s time for New York to PRIORITIZE the care of older adults in the Final State Budget! Governor Kathy Hochul, Andrea Stewart-Cousins, & Carl E. Heastie please provide a 10.5% INCREASE to nursing home Medicaid rates and require that reimbursement be updated at least every 5 yrs! #NursingHomeSOS #NYHealthBudgetGap

Citizens have the power to Vote lawmakers that make such decisions out! The greater problems are: 1. the shortage of caregivers for patients with the growing numbers of Alzheimer’s persons; 2. the growing shortage of healthcare professionals to properly diagnose and provide a complete and comprehensive care plan for these patients; 3. planning for longterm care and implementing Medicare plans with long care rather than Medicaid (you have to be poor unless you have a long term care plan or have savings to pay for longterm care caregiving). All families cannot afford to quit working to care for their love ones. Research has disclosed that “Black Americans and Latino Americans are about twice as likely and 1.5 times as likely, respectively, to develop Alzheimer’s as non-Hispanic white Americans are, according to the nonprofit Us Against Alzheimer’s.” https://lnkd.in/eP7K3tTQ
