We all love to think we’re building great relationships with our clients don’t we 🤩
I always talk to our team about having meaning and an authentic approach to everything we do but nothing applies more to this than building relationships with clients.
So to receive a LinkedIn notification “you’ve been mentioned in a post” by one of your clients and to read what had been written by Jamie Fraser was definitely a highlight that week!
Jamie was one of the first CEOs I spoke to after joining PGC Group. Our first session was looking at potential states to open an office and what the upsides and potential downsides were. Our top three locations we discussed were, Miami Florida, New York City and Austin, Texas.
Fast forward three years later and he’s opened successfully in both Miami and New York City! It’s been a privilege to watch the InterEx Group journey and to have had insights to various exceptional leaders in their business.
So I thought I would share some of my top tips for building relationships:
✨ Be yourself; authenticity matters. Not everyone is going to like you and that’s okay, but no one can build genuine relationships by pretending to be someone you aren’t.
✨ Understand their goals early; if you can’t be aligned to their direction from the offset, then the foundations will be based on the wrong things and it will fail pretty quickly.
✨ Share your goals for the relationship; help them visualise what you’re trying to build with them and do this regularly. Sometimes when things go wrong (as we’re all human and mistakes can be made), I find it helpful to remind each other of those goals to keep our eyes on the long term so we don’t get lost in the here and now.
✨ Always be honest and transparent; even when it’s difficult. Hard conversations have to be had sometimes, the more open you can be, the better.
✨ Learn how to be empathetic and show it. Care beyond the basis of your relationship and empathise with what they might be facing, extend support or advice where invited beyond what’s in it for you.
✨ And always remember it’s better to build long term, sustainable and healthy relationships then just looking for what’s in it for you or your business right now!
