Outreach Manager (Production Arts) at Guildhall School of Music & Drama and writer/lyricist/composer of With Courage musical for the RNLI's 200th Anniversary Programme
I welcome anything that encourages students from all backgrounds to apply to higher education, and UCAS dropping the personal statement from applications in place of three structured questions seems to be a good step forward. Working in Outreach for a Drama School, and particularly for Production Arts, question 2 does concern me though. "How have your qualifications and studies helped you prepare for this course and subject?" Given the deliberate erosion of creative opportunities and subjects available through state schools over the past decade and more, here's hoping our new Government will be able to reverse the damage being done as quickly as possible, to ensure all our future applicants feel equipped to answer this question as well as possible. This lack of answers many will have when (or if) considering creative arts paths is largely the reason for my job existing and the primary ignition for every project we've created and run so far, including one game-changer being publicly announced soon (which may help a little with Q2). I'm looking forward to extending the reach of the programmes we're building, alongside our generous funding partners and exceptional Access & Participation team, to ensure we find as many young people as possible and help them answer the new Q2 with every confidence.

It’s both incredibly short-sighted, a disservice to the community, and more than likely—a game of political opportunism when liberal arts colleges come under attack—even worse so when they close. Regardless of your personal politics, there’s nothing “liberal” about liberal arts—no more so than now in 2024 versus 1844. We simply can’t pivot society overnight to STEM-only colleges and/or corporate careers, nor can or should we cherry pick institutions to recruit and/or hire from. We need employees and community members who can effectively communicate in writing and verbally, have top-notch presentation skills, pick up context clues by just reading an email or memo, and we need those who can make sense of the important work being done in the STEM field, but explained in a way the rest of us can “get it” and understand. All of that is liberal arts education, so respectfully, don’t ask for people who can communicate effectively if you only want STEM candidates—it simply doesn’t work that way. As a product of a liberal arts education, someone who was/is very familiar with what BSC brought to the Birmingham community, and a neurodivergent learner myself, the ongoing losses of liberal arts institutions is disheartening. The state of Alabama and the city of Birmingham lost a great resource in a region where there aren’t many. Don’t think it can’t happen elsewhere, folks. #LiberalArtsMatter
Who are my ride or die liberal arts people? This one hit hard. CTCL schools are core. And now one of the bastions of critical thinking in Alabama is gone. Half of my family is from Birmingham. It’s about students always— find us a home in your distress. 💔

Today is National Higher Education Day! Did you know less than 50% of first-time college and university students complete their degree in six years? The top reasons for dropping out are financial difficulties and poor academic preparedness. Observed annually on June 6th, National Higher Education Day aims to change this by educating and inspiring future graduates. The mission is to equip students both scholastically and financially for higher education as well as champion the accessibility of higher education and educate students about scholarship opportunities and college readiness. 📚 Founded in 2015 by Izamar Olaguez and Marcie Hronis to encourage students to pursue post-secondary education, it was also created to raise awareness about the need for more affordable tuition and fees at colleges and universities, particularly in the US. While the day officially started recently, the motivation behind this day goes back 50 years earlier to its very first celebration, which started with the National Higher Education Act of 1965. The act aimed to enhance the opportunities for students by helping through higher education programs and financial assistance, making education more accessible for everyone. 🌍 Let’s advocate for making higher education accessible for everyone! Check out this article, highlighting our event and partnership with South Texas College. It's great to see a near end to the National obsession with the points race. This approach to education can exclude an exceptional cohort of our youth in accessing third level education. The new provision of educational pathways creates equality of opportunity for those who may not reach the points race. This option will reduce unnecessary pressure upon leaving certificate examinations. More importantly, this pathway will help to improve the mental health of our youth in society and opens up a chance for opportunity and change. Well done Minister Simon Harris and to educational colleagues across the country whose implementating the change👏 #tertiaryeducation #equalitydiversityinclusion #equalityofopportunity #educationaltransformation #Department of Further and Higher Education, Research Innovation and Science
I want to end the near national obsession with the "points race" and provide pathways and alternatives for people to access third level education outside that system. That's why I've worked to reform the system and set up degrees you access outside the points system which you start in your local further education college and finish in a university. Today I am announcing a massive expansion of this with an almost doubling of courses in a whole range of areas like nursing, engineering, construction, music production and much more. More info in the video and on nto.ie - please share to spread the word! Thanks. How important have 'dual-credit' programs been for hundreds of thousands of students across the United States since 1986? The dual-credit program between a community college and a secondary school started in Ottawa, Illinois, U.S., in 1986. Prior to that time students were taking 'honors' courses which were almost identical to freshman year college courses. The complaint from many students to their college counselors was, "this course is almost identical to the one I had in high school." This story on the first dual-credit program between these two educational institutions change that concern. Now there is not a secondary school to be found that is not offering dual-credit courses through their local area community or technical college.
