Based on Latinos LEAD (Latinos for Leadership Excellence and Diversity) research, only 12% of the nonprofits in the region have at least one Latinx board member. As our CEO, Ron Gonzales, emphasizes, it's not just about pledges but the need for actionable strategies. The HFSV Latino Board Leadership Academy recruits, trains, and guides Latinos to serve on local nonprofit boards—an essential step to ensuring that invaluable and underrepresented voices are heard. Let's champion diversity in decision-making and amplify underrepresented voices. Learn more about our Academy👉 https://bit.ly/3P4C10Z https://bit.ly/3TSoj5v

As we close out Black Philanthropy Month we'd like to share some resources and food for thought for those interested in grantmaking, social investment and supporting diversity in Global Philanthropy. 1. Check out the following: https://lnkd.in/eFYHtrwS https://lnkd.in/e_7cdBdf 7 Faces of Philanthropy https://lnkd.in/eytYWB78 2. Black Philanthropy is unrecognised as 'structured' Philanthropy- $860bn of global Remittances to the Global South prove that giving is happening but we need to measure and be clear about the strategy for these social investments. Thanks to Thelma Ekiyor Dr. Jackie “Bouvier” Copeland Precious Zumbika-Lwanga MBA #VeronicamartinOBE #romeoeffs 3. Let's explore the concept of broadening the definition of Philanthropy - the love of humanity. If you feel good by giving if it makes sense to help Communities if you give you're time freely towards a cause if you're altruistic and want to "do the right thing" if you care about LEGACY and Generational Impact if you care about Social Justice if you support historically underserved and persecuted causes, visionaries and Communities ....then you're a Philanthropist. 4. Accountability, Governance and Impact Reporting structures are critical to Donors, so nonprofits need to get these fundamentals right. - your Boards, Policies, Financials etc. Promoters of social initiatives must clearly demonstrate that the funds are going to Impactful causes in total alignment with declared plans. 5. Advocate for funding equity and fair capital access for all - Global Africa only gets 1-2% of large institutional funds be it venture, philanthropic, funding for women, funding for Black women ... we must do better.

Nwamaka Agbo, MPA, CEO of the Kataly Foundation, believes that philanthropy must stand firmly on the side of justice to fulfill its role in fostering a more inclusive and equitable democracy. In a recent piece from The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Agbo argues that true advancements in American democracy have always been achieved through organized resistance, not by waiting for change. As a result, philanthropy must provide unwavering support to social movements and communities, taking bold steps towards a truly inclusive democracy. Read the full piece to learn how Agbo believes we can collectively push for a more equitable future. #SocialJusticePhilanthropy #KatalyFoundation #EquitableDemocracy
Some in philanthropy say calls for equality are too divisive. Yet organized resistance led by Black Americans forged democracy’s greatest advancements. In a guest essay for #TheCommons, Nwamaka Agbo argues that philanthropy "has the moral responsibility to support those committed to the ever-enduring struggle for a more just world." Agbo is the CEO of the Kataly Foundation. https://bit.ly/4baCKXO

Celebrating Juneteenth: Empowering Change through Collective Giving ✊🏿✨ Reflecting on Liberation, Resilience, and the Power of Unity Today, we honor Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in American history when, on June 19, 1865, the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom. This day symbolizes not only liberation and resilience but also the ongoing fight for equality. As we commemorate this day, we have an opportunity to reflect on the power of collective giving and philanthropy in driving meaningful change within our communities. This targeted approach helps create long-term, sustainable improvements. 🤝 Fosters Unity: Collective giving brings diverse groups together, fostering understanding, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose. By working together, we can bridge divides and strengthen our communities. We are still fighting for freedom, regardless of being “given” a day. Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a significant day in American history marking the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free. This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Recognizing Juneteenth is more than just acknowledging a date; it’s about honoring the struggles and achievements of Black Americans, reflecting on our history, and committing to actions that promote equality and justice. As businesses and individuals, we have the power and responsibility to show up for Black communities. One impactful way to do this is by supporting nonprofits that are dedicated to expanding their reach and helping those who are disenfranchised. Organizations like Fearless Fund, Colorful Connections, and more are on the front lines, working tirelessly to create opportunities and provide resources to those in need. By donating to these nonprofits, we can help amplify their efforts in areas such as education, economic empowerment, health care, and criminal justice reform. Your support can make a real difference in building a more equitable society. Let’s use this Juneteenth to not only celebrate but also to take meaningful action. Together, we can foster a future where freedom and equality are truly realized for all. The Solutions Project is a national non-profit that funds and amplifies climate justice solutions created by frontline communities building power for an equitable and regenerative economy. Since 2015, they’ve invested over $31M in grants to over 280 grantees – mostly led by women of color.
