Big Announcement for Black Philanthropy Month 2024: ”Afro-Futures of Giving” is our theme this year! From its roots, Black Philanthropy Month (BPM) has mobilized Afro-descendant and allied donors, investors, and leaders worldwide toward a brighter future for Black people (see Copeland 2014, 2015, and 2020). For 2024, BPM is activating contemporary Afro-futurism to help our Movement throughout the US and worldwide imagine and co-create a more powerful future for Black giving and community finance in general. You can start creating the future of Black giving now with leaders worldwide by using this Dr. Martin Luther King’s Day to respond to three Afro-future giving prompts: 1. Describe your ideal future for Black giving and/or social finance. 2. What factors are driving the future of Black giving and social finance available to promote wellness, equity, and justice in Black families, institutions, and communities? 3. What are three concrete actions that you will take as a change agent in your family, community, workplace, and/or other affiliations during 2024 to increase the chances that your vision of a Black Giving Future comes to fruition over the next five years? Share your thoughts on social media in response to this post. You can also respond at https://lnkd.in/eKb-yN7s. BPM and partners will be by your side, providing more tools over the next 8 months to map, celebrate, and share your Black Giving Future. 🛠️🎉 For more information about our 2024 theme, Afro-Futures of Giving, visit our website at https://lnkd.in/gDxxgMW. Together, let's tap into our collective power of hope, self-love, and mutual support to change the course of history—again. 🌟❤️ #BPM2024 #BlackPhilanthropyMonth #BlackPhilanthropy #AfroFuture #AfroFuturesofGiving #BlackGivingFutures #BlackFundingEquity #MLKDay

It’s Black Philanthropy Month. The theme? Love in Action! 🌟🖤 This August I want to call attention to Black Philanthropy Month because we have an opportunity to challenge traditional notions of philanthropy and reimagine a future of giving that doesn’t continue to perpetuate the issues we desperately want to solve. Here are five ways that Black philanthropy is different than traditional forms of philanthropy. 🤝 It Embraces Community Responsibility: Black philanthropy understands and takes advantage of the power of community support. It’s rooted in a cultural belief that "It takes a village to raise a child" and drives members of the community to uplift each other collectively and to secure generational wealth for the Black community. 💚 It Positions Philanthropy as Love: Philanthropy in this instance becomes an extension of love that when positioned in this manner more actively abandons saviorism. Instead, it embodies a commitment to one another. Love as action calls people to show up for each other through time, talents, and treasures. 🌍 It Focuses on Empowering Black Communities: Black communities hold the solutions to their challenges. However, the reality remains that many Black-led organizations continue to be underfunded. So, let's unite to invest in Black communities, as currently less than 2% of traditional funds support Black-led organizations. 🔗 It Embraces New Perspectives and Definitions of Giving: Inspired by African roots, Black communities have created a model of philanthropy focused on building connections, sharing truthful narratives, and making direct financial investments, sometimes even peer-to-peer. 🌈 It Manifests Love that Transcends: Black philanthropy supports walking hand-in-hand, breaking barriers, healing generational wounds, while also valuing our shared humanity. It focuses on the celebration and legacy of Black generosity, promote healing, and increase investments in Black communities. So, as some of us celebrate Black Philanthropy Month and reflect on the power of love in action, I ask that we all question our giving practices. We must interrogate our practices. Are we perpetuating outdated models of benevolence, or are we truly empowering communities? It's time to rethink our approach to giving and ensure that our actions align with our commitment to create lasting, transformative change. #BlackPhilanthropyMonth #EmpowerCommunities #CSR #philanthropy #corporategiving #corporatefundraising #corporatecitizenship #InvestInBlackCommunities

As we continue to recognize Black Philanthropy month, we encourage you to revisit the The Bridgespan Group report on racial equity and philanthropy https://lnkd.in/gxfQmeZV which highlights some of the data that drives our work. Despite often disproportionate needs, communities of color have historically received a much smaller percentage of mainstream philanthropic dollars. The issues we face are complex, but the act of giving is not. Join us in supporting Black leaders and solutions that advance equity and benefit us all. https://lnkd.in/gjDpdVay #TheCAFEGroup #BPM2023

Listening in Black philanthropy is not just a passive act; it's a dynamic, transformative force. Black philanthropists funding in Black communities possess an intimate understanding of the communities' distinctive needs, and because of this, Black leaders have consistently been the architects of their own social, cultural, and economic liberation. Effective philanthropy is responsive to the evolving needs of communities. Through active listening, philanthropists can stay attuned to changing circumstances, emerging challenges, and evolving priorities within Black communities. This responsiveness ensures that philanthropic efforts remain relevant and impactful. In essence, listening is the cornerstone of effective and impactful Black philanthropy. It ensures that philanthropic efforts are rooted in empathy, cultural competence, and a genuine commitment to empowering Black communities to chart their own path towards liberation and prosperity. If you would like to honor Black Philanthropy Month, consider giving your time and financial resources to organizations that listen to, engage, and partner with black philanthropists, foundations, and communities 365 days a year. August is Black Philanthropy Month (BPM), founded by Dr. Jackie “Bouvier” Copeland, a month-long celebration and awareness campaign dedicated to recognizing and promoting the philanthropic efforts of individuals and communities of African descent. While we will celebrate BPM all month, it is important that we also recognize organizations that listen to and respond to feedback from Black communities 365 days a year. The aim of BPM is to elevate the importance of giving, volunteerism, and funding equity within the Black community and beyond. This month-long observance invites all individuals of African ancestry and their allies to recognize the transformative power of listening to guide philanthropic efforts. While BPM started in the United States, it quickly gained global recognition and participation. BPM celebrates philanthropic efforts in African-descent communities around the world, emphasizing the importance of listening and acting on feedback to build communities and foster social change. Black philanthropists have long understood and practiced the power of active listening and engagement to identify community needs and gain trust. Also, Black Philanthropy Month calls for greater inclusivity and representation for Black leaders and organizations in the philanthropic sector. Black Philanthropy Month is a great opportunity to learn about the work of Black-led philanthropy and adopt the practice of following your listening with giving. If you are interested in learning more, you can visit the organizations Black Philanthropy Month, HERitage Giving Fund, and Giving Black, where they are doing this work 365 days a year. #365Campaign #BlackPhilanthropyMonth

Comrades, did you know that August is Black Philanthropy Month? August is dedicated to Black Giving and we hope that you will support Creative Nomads in TWO Giving Days - CllctivGive + Give 8/28 (both donation links are in our Instagram bio @creative_nomads) The 2023 theme of Black Philanthropy Month is LOVE IN ACTION. Inspired by the times and the late scholar-activist bell hooks’ writings on love as a necessary foundation for true social change. This years goal envisions a field that moves beyond the rhetoric of philanthropy as love for humanity to make it real in Black communities. As you support Black-led nonprofits this month, here are some questions to consider and talk about with family and friends - What would philanthropy look like if it were driven by love of all humanity including Black people? What would Black-led philanthropy look like if it were driven by self-love? Building on our equity principles, how can the movement of Black Philanthropy expand love of Black humanity and equity? #BPM2023 #ArtOverEverything #TheCreativeNomads

The path to racial equity is not always immediate, but we must tread together. That's why we're launching our #10/10/10 campaign. For the next six weeks, we're inviting 2,500 champions of change to invest in our vital work! Your generosity will support our mission to work as an educator, advocate, supporter, and convener to address and eliminate the barriers created by structural racism and to advance long-term solutions that create new opportunities for Black people to thrive. Why $10? Because there's undeniable strength in numbers. Your $10, combined with thousands of others, becomes a powerful force for good. These contributions fuel programs like ABC Academy, Racial Equity Training, Community Convos, and our Board Pipeline Program. Progress takes time, but every investment in racial equity brings us closer to our goal. Together, we're breaking down barriers, one step at a time. Join us on this journey.
