In The Trevor Project’s youth LGBTQ+ mental health survey for 2024, they had key findings that for a queer person is not shocking, but still important for everyone to sit and reflect on. Of these a few that stand out: *39% of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year — including 46% of transgender and nonbinary young people. LGBTQ+ youth of color reported higher rates than White peers. *Among all LGBTQ+ young people, 84% wanted mental health care, and of the young people who wanted it, only 50% had access. *The overwhelming majority (90%) of LGBTQ+ young people said their well-being was negatively impacted due to recent politics. Over half (53%) said their well-being was negatively impacted by politics a lot. In other findings by the Human Rights Campaign, *At least 286 BIPOC trans and gender non-conforming people have been killed –translating to 85% of all victims identified to -date. Almost two-thirds (61.8%) of all victims have been Black trans women–a total of 207 lives lost. The majority of victims (76.4%) were under the age of 35, almost 70% of incidents involved a firearm, and many cases remain unsolved since 2013. Amongst the rainbow merch and the parades, for my non LGBTQ+ people, remember so many have fought before us to get to where we are now and as you can read above, we still have so far to go. Pride is and has always been political- there is so much ignorant, anti-trans legislation across the country and we must remain vigilant in combating ignorance we encounter day to day in our lives, in the workplace and hold our elected officials accountable. According to a national intimate partner and sexual violence study by the Office on Violence Against Women, members of the LGBTQ+ community experience slightly higher rates of violence than their heterosexual counterparts. This is not surprising because people from marginalized groups are at an increased risk as abusers often capitalize on existing social and economic vulnerabilities to wield control. Abusers leverage these vulnerabilities against LGBTQ+ survivors through things like identity abuse. This involves the threat of outing them to family, friends, or coworkers if they do not stay in the abusive relationship. The abusers know—or threaten—that being outed could result in the loss of their job, housing, or support systems. We can all do better as a community by educating ourselves, listening to the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals, and speaking up when we see discriminatory or abusive behavior.

S4215/A5750 is a bill currently moving through the NJ State Legislature. This legislation will cut off young people’s connection to vital online information by requiring parents to consent and upload government-issued identification for minors to create or maintain social media accounts. Young people are increasingly using social media to learn about a wide range of issues and information they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives. PPAFNJ is committed to ensuring they can continue to do so. In addition to the impacts articulated above, this bill could also cut off crucial information for the following communities: Domestic violence and sexual assault victims who come from abusive homes may struggle to get permission from their parents or guardians to access social platforms, thus cutting them off from critical support and resources. For immigrant youth, permission from their parents may be impossible if their parents do not have the proper identification or credit card to complete the registration process. LGBTQ+ youth may be denied permission from unsupportive parents and miss out on crucial support spaces and resources from members of the LGBTQ community. However, it's crucial to recognize the challenges many still face. “It's the traditional folks who aren't at the table. It's still trying to leverage trust and resources and time and priorities with communities and individuals who are most impacted by the crime and may be in the root causes and experiences that we don't see. The response is pretty white.” One of the main findings of The Colorado Project 2023 was a need for better representation in anti-trafficking partnerships. 60% of research participants said they want to diversify their task forces and coalitions. In order to be more effective, partnerships must prioritize survivors and organizations supporting underrepresented groups, including immigrants, tribal communities, sex workers, youth, and LGBTQ+. No one should have to live with domestic abuse. Domestic abuse affects everyone, it knows no boundaries of gender, sexuality, and ethnicity. It impacts us all. The LGBTQ+ community often remains less visible to services, and evidence suggests that the abuse they experience can be particularly severe. There are still too many misconceptions and stereotypes around what a ‘typical victim’ of domestic abuse looks like, resulting in LGBTQ+ people being ‘hidden’. This means they may not be able to access support, and are unlikely to report the abuse to the police. We must work together to ensure everyone can reach out for help and support. It’s crucial that their experiences and stories are heard, believed, and that we empower people to feel comfortable and confident to report abuse or seek support. February is LGBTQ+ History Month. We know that in 2024, many LGBTQ+ people around the world still do not live in safety or freedom as they face persecution from their governments, or rejection from their families or cultural communities. There are 64 counties with laws that criminalise homosexuality. This marginalisation means that LGBTQ+ people can often be disproportionately affected by sexual exploitation and human trafficking. Trafficking gangs will seek out people without support networks, who are poor, homeless, marginalised, or desperate. Making people less vulnerable and attractive to traffickers is key to preventing modern slavery from taking place. This month and every month, we’re working hard to raise awareness of modern slavery, while supporting survivors to rebuild their lives. #LGBTHistoryMonth #ModernSlavery
