October 22nd was my last day as the Global Shelter Cluster Coordinator on behalf of the IFRC. I want to share a few spontaneous thoughts on what this role meant for me. I have had the honor for 7 years, 3 months and 22 days and I felt that I was still learning. Learning every day from the fantastic colleagues in all corners of the world who believe in what shelter means for people and who believe that we can collectively do a much better job through collaboration and coordination. Thank you for being the humanitarians that you are and doing what you do. A lot of people reached out, praising me for my leadership. I humbly accept your kind words and trust. When I got the job, I had big shoes to fill and didn’t have much of a clue. It was scary and I never imagined that it would become one of the parts of my job that I loved and appreciated the most. Nobody can be a leader without people believing in them or following them. Thank you for putting your bets on me, we went places together. And don’t be afraid of change, it may bring about your next favorite purpose in life. We live in a world where nobody is strong enough, big enough or smart enough to tackle the challenges our work throws at us. I believe that if there is a way out and forward, the key is through genuine and equitable partnerships and collaboration. Let’s focus on what unites us and not what divides us. Let’s focus on what works and not on what doesn’t. Let’s focus on everyone’s strengths and not weaknesses. There is so much work for all of us.

Are you interested in buried streams and their histories? If you're not sure, the story of Asylum Brook, in Beacon, NY, will convince you that it's a topic worth your time. Named for the former Matteawan State Hospital, this little stream illustrates how ideas about productive use of the land have changed over time and helps us think about how we want our cities to grow in the future. Check out the StoryMap I made here: https://arcg.is/0iWW1K
