🔬 Improving the standard of care for patients with #prostatecancer 🔬   Prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting Canadian men, and while there have been significant advances in the treatment of this disease, it’s difficult for patients to access the best possible care. 2024 Terry Fox New Investigator Dr. Lucas C. Mendez, an assistant professor at Western University and a radiation oncologist at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), hopes to improve the standard of care for patients with prostate cancer by creating an accessible and cost-effective method of delivering #targeted #radiation.    With this funding, Dr. Mendez will test the use of micro-ultrasound (microUS) for delivering radiation to cancerous lesions in the prostate. Compared to cumbersome technologies currently used, microUS is portable, relatively inexpensive and can deliver results in real time.   “This funding from The Terry Fox Research Institute will allow us to translate micro-ultrasound technology to the radiation world,” says Dr. Mendez. “Once we succeed adapting the micro-ultrasound technology to the radiotherapy workflow, we will contrast it to other state of the art imaging modalities that have been used clinically. Then, the newly developed workflow will be evaluated clinically in two small #clinicaltrials.”   Dr. Mendez hopes this work can act as a trailblazer, improving the standard of care for patients with prostate cancer and, potentially, expanding to other pelvic tumours in the future. If your doctor suspects you may have cancer or wants to look closer at a suspicious nodule, he or she may recommend a PET scan. This safe, advanced imaging modality can cut scan time for patients and radiation exposure in half, leaving physicians with high-quality images that can detect cancer cells the size of a pencil tip. At the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion, we offer PET scanning at both our Savannah and Bluffton campuses, having the only PET imaging machine in the Bluffton area. If you’ve ever had a CT or MRI scan, you may find some similarities, mostly the fact that you are lying in a tubal machine to produce images inside your body. However, there are some key differences you should be aware of if your doctor orders a PET or PET-CT scan. “A lot of people when they walk in the door, they’ve had CTs and they are used to getting a quick injection and go in the scanner for 10 minutes or so and they are done,” says Bill Feagley, PET-CT technologist at the St. Joseph’s/Candler – Bluffton Campus. “But here at PET scanning, it takes a little longer. "I believe the future of the brain cancer field will be more personalized, minimally invasive, and quality-focused. Historically, our field has been most concerned with extending quantity of life, with only minimal emphasis on patients’ quality of life. Newly developed molecularly-focused agents continue to emerge and will allow for more targeted brain cancer treatment protocols in the future. Concomitantly, minimal- or non-invasive approaches, including use of novel keyhole surgical techniques, tubular retractor systems to elegantly access deep brain lesions, and ultrasound or endovascular interventions for the delivery of chemotherapy, all hold enormous promise within neurosurgery to minimize morbidity while providing maximally effective care. I am more hopeful now than ever that these burgeoning avenues of brain cancer management will be able to not only extend overall survival, but also maintain functionality and excellent quality of life for our patients and their loved ones in the years and decades ahead.
