Introducing Catherine Barnes AALIA(DCP), Teacher Librarian at Endeavour College in South Australia and a dedicated Lumination Lab Champion. 💡 Discover how Catherine's journey to becoming a confident Lab Champion, assisting the teachers at Endeavour integrate the Lumination Learning Lab into their lessons, has helped develop her perception of #ImmersiveTechnology in education. ⭐️ Before joining the Lab Champions Program, what was your experience with immersive technology in education? I had used virtual reality a little to visit museums but had not fully immersed it in the curriculum or explored co-creation of spaces. ⭐️ Since becoming a Lab Champion and implementing Lumination Learning Labs, how has your perception of immersive technology evolved? My perception has widened to consider immersive technology not as a delivery tool, but an environment which allows for staff and students to co-create realities relevant to their learning. ⭐️ What role did the onboarding and professional development provided by our team play in supporting you as a Lab Champion? The willingness of Zeinab tailor the training to our needs meant we could clearly see how and why we would utilize immersive technology and the benefits it could have for our school. My confidence and proficiency grew as I familiarized myself with the technology in the context of how I will use it in my teaching. ⭐️ Reflecting on your journey as a Lab Champion, what advice would you give to educators who are hesitant to embrace immersive technology in their teaching practices? I always saw immersive technology as an individualised environment. The Lumination Lab opens it up to a shared experience. As all in the room can see the environments their peers are navigating, it becomes a collaborative activity where teachers and students can learn from each other. ⭐️ What is a specific example of how immersive technology has enhanced student engagement and learning outcomes in your classroom? Google Earth has been a powerful tool for students to share their background and experiences. With many students at our school being first or second generation Australians, they have been able to share their homeland, and often even their family house, despite the geographical distance. This has opened up conversations about culture and family, creating understanding amongst the students. ⭐️ What is your favourite experience or application within Lumination Learning Labs to use with your students, and why? My favourite experience is Curious Alice, everytime I explore the experience I find something new. A true storytelling environment where you choose your own adventure and encounter the highs and lows of the choices you make. Ever lost yourself in a gripping novel or an exhilarating game? That's the power of immersion! This supercharged state fires up our senses, commanding our attention and injecting motivation into the experience. It's a world where gaming industries and burgeoning virtual realities reign supreme, and striking immersive art exhibits, like the Van Gogh one pictured, leave us breathless. Yet, another form of immersion exists - a deep psychological dive into a mental state of absorption. How can we harness this level of focus for learning? Students who are truly immersed don't just learn, they relish the process, soaking up knowledge and gaining fulfilment. How can ordinary learning designers without the budgets for high-end immersive tech, incorporate elements to spark immersion? Here are some notes from my observations: 📜 A compelling story - just like a good book, a captivating narrative snags our attention, tapping into our emotions and our quest for understanding. 🤚Personal touch - It's surprising how much more we lean in when our individuality is considered - be it acknowledging our name or our unique preferences. 🧩 Problem-solving - Our instinctive desire to conquer challenges can be channelled into learning, fueling our desire for mastery and evidence of progression. 👫Social exchange and response - The contagious nature of group-based learning and interaction can boost immersion rates. Now, I'm curious: ❓ How do you integrate immersion into your learning design process? ❓ Have your attempts at creating an immersive experience ever missed the mark?
