Health plans "say their artificial intelligence models can increase efficiency and 'cut costs,' but they refused to discuss what models they’re using, how those models were developed, or exactly what they’re using them for," Brittany Trang of STAT writes. In fact, a STAT News review of regulatory filings from publicly traded health insurers shows several are investing in AI with the goal of saving money, but "all of the insurers STAT contacted declined to elaborate on how they are using AI," Trang writes. One thing is certain: These investments have certainly had an impact on rates of denials, which have soared. Healthcare Operations Strategist | Managed Care Specialist | Process Management | Data Analysis & Reporting
This article from Forbes reports on the importance of shifting the healthcare discourse from AI to IA (intelligence assistance). The integration of AI in healthcare has sparked enthusiasm for its potential to revolutionize patient care and streamline processes. However, there are concerns about AI replacing clinicians and producing unreliable information that could lead to risks for healthcare organizations and patient harm. The author advocates for a paradigm shift toward IA, which emphasizes augmenting human decision-making rather than replacing it. This concept promises to reshape healthcare and various other industries. IA can utilize AI to provide data literacy at the point of care, offering natural language summaries of critical data tailored to the end user's specific credential level. This can significantly improve care coordination and outcomes, especially for patients with complex conditions. The shift from AI to IA signifies an acknowledgment that optimal solutions emerge from the fusion of human and machine intelligence. This transition represents not just technological progress but a stride toward a more collaborative, informed, and efficient future that never loses the human touch in healthcare and beyond. Ultimately, intelligence assistance in healthcare and other industries can lead to faster, more accurate, and more empathetic responses to human needs, enhancing the overall experience and outcomes. https://lnkd.in/dSAzDFzx #healthcare #healthcareai #healthcareit #ai #ia #ml

Most AI articles seem to have an ominous slant towards them. Just me, or does it get old seeing the benefits and betterments always tucked away behind the difficulties and dystopias? Don't get me wrong, I understand it. Although it would be nice to discuss AI, address the challenges, address how to overcome them, and not always make it seem like [my] world is on fire. (🎵"How 'bout yours?"🎵) One POSITIVE that stood out to me from this article; The AI Quotient Score. Healthcare lags behind the Analytics and AI Leads drastically, but compared to cross-sector average we're right there. The shining light is in the Strategy segment, where healthcare is actually above the average. Meaning we don't quite have the proper frameworks in place yet, but we're at least getting our ducks in a row for the near future. Healthcare has hid behind the "Outdated Industry" label for far too long. It's nice to see some indication that we are bucking up so future generations won't have quality of care diminish, while costs continue to sky rocket. See.. Not all negative. ✌

I have questions and quotes too. How many companies that are developing #AI for use in #healthcare really have taken the time to have the end user involved in the development and implementation of their tool? In many instances it seems like a solution that is searching for a problem without fully understanding the scope and depth of the problem (see one of the quotes from a patient who does not want AI listening in during their private conversations with a physician just so a progress note can be created). Why do we have progress notes? To improve medical care and document it? Ah, NO for billing purposes. Do you think insurance companies may like to hear the entire conversation to develop risk prediction models and create a more lucrative per member per month fee structure? Last I saw, the stock prices for the 3 largest insurance companies have increased by 60% since Covid. Just imagine the margins AI can create for them. I am having flashbacks with the EHR. Our systemwide adoption of EHR was filled with many promises (in 2011) that have been largely unfulfilled today (some 12 years later). At least with the EHR there were only a handful of vendors offering the EHR platform for a hospital or system, so picking which one to use, while an important endeavor, was manageable. With AI, the market is beginning to be flooded with companies promising many great efficiencies and improvements to our care and ability to provide it. We are nearing (I think) the peak of the Garnter hype cycle. How far down the trough of disillusionment will we fall? How will we be able to identify the contender from the pretender? Now don't get me wrong, I believe that a lot of good will come from this innovative AI era. BUT, it seems that most of these AI tools are being developed by data scientists and entrepreneurs without the necessary involvement of clinicians and patients (and others). How many hospital CEOs, CFOs, COOs have been involved in AI development for healthcare? Which will it be? "AI; pioneering unprecedented leaps in patient care." "Together, AI and healthcare refine healing possibilities." "In healthcare, AI's advancement can save lives." "Ai in healthcare; progress, precision, promise." OR "Without oversight, AI risks patient trust." "Unchecked AI can compromise medical ethics" "Without empathy, AI remains a cool tool" "In healthcare, AI hallucinations (errors) can cost lives." Interesting times. #UsingWhatWeHaveBetter https://lnkd.in/gQPyuenn
