Leading through uncertainty
“Think of the future.” My mind went blank. Slow, silent tears fell.

We were about to launch Our Kinds.
We were feeling strong.
-our first experiment had changed the model.
-we lent into what we had heard, experienced, learnt, felt.
It’s about ease and trust.
Will they #justbringitback?
We had values we believed in
-a dynamic strategy
-a beautiful team
-5 investors
My relationship had just failed.
-My vision for the world was my escape.
-Just 4 words cracked me open.
-What is my future?
Kim Perrier held me. “You have this. Bring all of you to this challenge.”

I love this photo. I love the humanity of these men. They are evocative of our team.
We can hold each other through uncertainty.
And we can each, in our own time, in the right moments, take the lead.

Are you a leader who is challenged by creating and driving a culture of innovation within your organization?
Leaders, if you're struggling with problem identification/solving, creative/critical thinking, driving a culture of innovation within your organization, I have some thoughts for you to consider.
Key Step: I highly recommend assessing how you are introducing and incubating the spirit of innovation within your organization. Organizational self-awareness is a necessary first step.
3 Questions to ask yourself and your team:
- Are you spending time with folks who are good at this or spend their time in the entrepreneurial or innovation space?
- Are you brainstorming with your teams on potential areas of stress and strain?
- Are you allowing others to suggest ideas and be creative in the absence of judgement?
Bottom Line: This comes down to a question of openness and trust within you as a leader and your organization/team. Leaders must be vulnerable when it comes to growing and driving a culture of innovation.
From my experience leading an Air Force base, there's simply no other way to get there. I didn't have all the answers, and neither did my leadership team. The problems and potential solutions, more often than not, came from the men and women on the front lines and in areas we least predicted. We fostered a culture of innovation by allowing outsiders to see, hear and talk with us. They provided broader and differing perspectives we hadn't even thought of (diversity of thought!). We had to take risks, be open to hearing ideas, give trust by empowering our subordinates.
What does this look like for you leaders out there?
Well, spending time with entrepreneurial and design leaders like Jeremy Utley and Henrik Werdelin provided me key insights and understanding...what to be mindful of when driving a culture of innovation. It doesn't get much better than this! Thank you both for being champions of entrepreneurial spirit and for spending some time with me and The Outlier Project Paddle.

Yesterday I started my 2.5 day Operation Lighthouse Men’s Retreat for Men looking to overcome obstacles in life and business so they can become the Leader others need them to be.
With one day down and partially into day 2, my observation is too many Men struggle silently. A silent Man is a weak Man.
