I can't help every local pet in need nearly as often as I used to, mostly because I don't have enough staff to call in the cavalry like we used to be able to do when we needed to do a procedure on a non surgery day but today the stars aligned and we helped this pup who's parents couldn't afford specialty care.
I have never done this procedure before. Tibial crest avulsions are pretty rare. But I must say that as far as open fracture repairs go or orthopedics in general, this was super easy. if I had all the right equipment and had actually performed this at least once before, it could have been a 20-30 minute procedure! (mine was a little longer 😁but I don't know that a specialist could have done a better job?)
Can anyone explain why our local BP would have quoted these folks the same price they charge for a TPLO or bone plate? ANYONE who has ever done an orthopedic procedure could probably do this! It would be less upsetting to me to see them double their prices over the past couple of years if the folks doing the work received a reasonable portion of it but to double prices to raise compensation what maybe 10%?? and double or triple their profit margins is just so offensive to me.
We are wondering why so many young vets are burning out and leaving clinical practice? With 60% or more doing internships, the majority of them at corporate owned specially hospitals, not research oriented educational facilities, they face economic euthanasia multiple times every shift. Pet owners cause THEM of not caring and price gauging not the stuffed shirts in some office far away. They quickly begin to believe that their degree has given them the privilege of killing patients they could fix, some, like this pup, fixed very easily!
I will end my rant here but if you are still reading PLEASE don't leave without clicking the link and liking the post! Penny is so cute she stands a good chance of breaking our Facebook post record for likes. She hit 100 in just a few hours!!
