So much conversation about current and future leadership gaps. If you're not trying to fill a role and having a hard time finding a great person, you will be soon. Years ago as a pastor I realized our leadership needs were not coming up with the growth we were seeing in our church. And there was no way we were going to be able to hire ourselves out of the situation. (Truthfully, even if we could - that would be a bad solution!) So we began implementing apprenticeship in some of our ministries to help grow leaders in competency, character, chemistry, and culture. The results were remarkable. Sure, it's slower than just appointing a leader and giving them the responsibility. But it's also way more effective. As in exponentially effective! In our worship ministry alone we went from 4 to 26 worship leaders over the span of a few years by being committed to a process of apprenticing leaders - slowly, intentionally, with encouragement, honest feedback, and opportunities to step in to greater responsibility. Now the organizations I work with hear about apprenticeship from me all the time: I do, You watch I do, You help You do, I help You do, I watch And then the cycle starts over as the apprentice carries on the work and you invest in someone new. What key enablers help ‘national’ staff transition to ‘international’ senior roles? The Canopy Lab did a recent study on this question, specifically focused on individuals in market systems development. Not surprisingly, national staff faced unconscious biases and structural constraints, and succeeded by having access to 5 career catalysts: 1. Mentoring & Coaching 2. Short-term Assignments 3. Sponsorship 4. Training 5. Visibility NB: These five catalysts were present to these individuals informally, rather than structurally. I was honored to receive a scholarship to attend the Out in Tech Leadership Institute, which may help make it possible for me to go to the institute this fall in New York City. However, I still need some help from you- my network and yours - to find a place to stay. I cannot afford to pay for a hotel while I am at the conference. Completing the TBS Mentorship Plus program has been a transformative experience for me. This unique initiative goes beyond traditional mentorship to provide a pathway towards sponsorship, an invaluable asset for anyone pursuing an executive career path. As a participant from an equity-seeking group, I particularly appreciated how the program championed diversity and inclusion, fostering a sense of belonging and connection within the organization. My mentor, Jean Cardinal, played a pivotal role in this process. Jean generously shared his wealth of knowledge, challenged my thinking, and provided candid insights on navigating organizational dynamics. Through his guidance, I developed actionable strategies and a resilient mindset for overcoming potential barriers on my journey. While the program has been incredibly valuable, there's always room for improvement. Establishing robust success evaluation metrics would be beneficial. These metrics could track protégé career advancement within the organization, leadership skill development, and sponsor satisfaction. This data would ensure the program continues to effectively serve its purpose.
