A big win for the ocean through the Tropical Forest and Coral Reef Conservation Act (TFCCA). The Nature Conservancy and our affiliate in Indonesia, Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN) recently joined with partners to announce a debt-for-nature swap as part of TFCCA. The debt-for-nature swap will reduce Indonesia’s debt to the U.S. by $35 million over the next nine years and will direct that money to support grants to protect and restore Indonesia’s coral reef ecosystems, including marine protected areas, improving marine resource management, and sustainable livelihoods for communities that rely on these ecosystems. Today the government of Canada announced the Canada–Nova Scotia Nature Agreement to advance nature conservation and protection across the province. Representatives of the Mi'kmaq of Nova Scotia were in attendance for the announcement. This unique collaboration will support the implementation of the Nature Agreement and all partners will work toward its target outcomes, including support for Mi'kmaq-led nature priorities and initiatives. The Government of Canada will invest up to $28.5 million over three years to implement the Agreement and help protect nature. This will support the Mi'kmaq of Nova Scotia's leadership in conservation, increase protection of sensitive habitats and recovery actions for species at risk and migratory birds, and protect and conserve new Crown and private land in Nova Scotia. With the support of this Agreement, Nova Scotia aims to increase the amount of protected and conserved areas within the province by 82,500 hectares by March 2026. Together, Canada and Nova Scotia will seek to accelerate the conservation of at least 20 percent of the total land and water mass in the province by 2030 to help achieve Canada's goal of protecting 30 percent of its land and inland water by 2030. Strangford Lough, located in County Down, Northern Ireland, is a site of significant environmental importance and is protected by multiple designations aimed at conserving its unique ecosystems and biodiversity. Here are the primary environmental protections placed on Strangford Lough: ⭐ Special Area of Conservation ⭐ Special Protection Area ⭐ Ramsar Site ⭐ Marine Conservation Zone ⭐ Area of Special Scientific Interest All these types of sites form the Marine Protected Area Network in Northern Ireland. More information is provided below on each of these designations: 🍃 Special Area of Conservation (SAC) 🍃 Strangford Lough is designated as an SAC under the European Union's Habitats Directive. This designation aims to protect habitats and species that are considered of European importance. The Lough supports several habitats listed in the directive, including mudflats, sandflats, and various types of coastal and subtidal habitats. 🦆 Special Protection Area (SPA) 🦆 The Lough is also designated as an SPA under the EU Birds Directive. This designation focuses on protecting bird species that are rare or vulnerable in Europe. Strangford Lough is particularly important for overwintering and migrating birds, such as the light-bellied brent goose and other waterfowl. 🌳 Ramsar Site 🌳 Strangford Lough is recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. This designation highlights the Lough's global significance, particularly in terms of its wetland biodiversity and the conservation of waterfowl habitats. 🐟 Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) 🐟 The Lough is designated as an MCZ, which aims to protect marine habitats and species, ensuring the sustainable use of marine resources. 🍁 Canada Makes Strides for Nature Conservation! 🍁 A groundbreaking billion-dollar pact for biodiversity has just been inked. The federal government, British Columbia, and the First Nations Leadership Council have introduced a monumental Tripartite Framework Agreement on Nature Conservation. This remarkable initiative marks a substantial leap toward Canada's objective of safeguarding 30% of its lands and waters by 2030. A whopping $1 billion (CAD) investment is earmarked for habitat protection, safeguarding endangered species, preventing wildfires, and sharing knowledge.
