I'm glad to see I'm not alone. She's not giving up and neither am I. As a Junior UX designer, I've share her pain and her career "limitations": • My current projects on my portfolio are mostly boot camp projects. Maybe this used to cut it a few years ago, but recruiters want to see in-depth, launched projects. • I don’t have sufficient experience. Most jobs posted are looking for designers with at least 3 years of experience, and in reality are mostly looking for senior designers. • The job market is incredibly saturated. The UX Design industry is full of countless junior designers — so what are you doing actively to stand out? If anyone has advice on getting hired as a junior (beyond intern/volunteer work), I will welcome any tips. She's not giving up and neither am I.
Going out of my comfort zone a bit here, but I just published my first article on Medium! 🎉 I've been thinking about doing so for a while now, but now that I have been job searching for this long I felt like I could write about it more confidently. I wrote a little bit about my experience job seeking so far in 2023, and I hope this inspires others to share their experiences as well. Please check it out and let me know what you think, or if you want to add to the conversation. I'd love to know what other junior designers are feeling and doing now. Also, a special shout out to my mentor Jane Mun for her encouragement in creating UX-related content. 💫 #medium #jobsearch #uxdesign #juniordesigner #jobs #ux

Lately, my job search has been flooded with Senior-level UX Designer positions. The opportunities for experience designers are great, but where are the entry-level jobs for people like me? It feels impossible to get that crucial experience in order to grow as a designer. We need opportunities to gain experience, but most openings require experience to begin with. 😕 #UXDesign #EntryLevel #JobSearch #DesignCommunity

Being a junior developer and looking for a job can be tough. Many companies ask for years of experience even for entry-level positions, which makes it really hard to get started. It's like being stuck in a never-ending loop where you need experience to get a job, but you can't get experience without a job. This situation holds back talented and enthusiastic newcomers and prevents the industry from benefiting from fresh ideas and creativity. To change this, companies should consider skills, passion, and potential more than just experience when hiring. Creating a supportive environment for learning and mentoring can help young developers succeed and contribute to the tech community.
Friendly reminder for designers. Entry level design jobs should not require 3 years experience. Entry level design has nothing to do with years experience. We need to promote an inclusive design cultur that welcomes juniors! Agree? #ux #ui #career #jobs #productdesign

I had to take a personality test while applying for the position of a UX Designer today. The purpose of this test is unknown to the applicant as well as how it plays a role in the overall hiring process. It is also clearly not related to the actual opening, so I wonder why recruiters/companies use these. This was not the first time I came across one of these but can someone care to explain what these tests DO exactly? I would like to know before I invest another 20 mins of my day answering random questions about resource allocation or whether I like to make decisions based on logic or intuition. 👇 is an example of one of these questions. Clearly not related to UX or design remotely. 🤷♀️

Absolutely, I couldn’t agree more. Entry-level positions should be an opportunity for recent graduates or those new to the industry to gain practical experience and develop their skills. By setting high experience barriers for these roles, we limit the pool to those who had the privilege of securing internships or have been freelancing while studying, which may not be possible for everyone. This could lead to a less diverse and inclusive design industry. An inclusive design culture not only benefits the design community but also leads to better, more empathetic designs that consider a wider range of user experiences.

As a generalist in UX/UI Design, I pride myself in being able to complete projects end to end. But as I have been actively applying for jobs, I find myself unsure which position to apply for, so I apply to them all. Which isn't a bad thing because it allows the ability to explore many avenues within UX/UI Design. But after speaking with Jason Andrews I became aware that I needed to find a specific avenue that interests me within UX/UI Design and hone in on my skills within that career field. He informed me that when applying to multiple roles, hiring managers or recruiters may view my portfolio and possibly be unsure what my specialty may be and how I could bring something unique to their team. That instantly made me think of this quote from William Shakespeare and how it can be used in helping me determine my 'specialty'. Which is also known as a " T specialist " in UX/UI Design. What's your UX/UI Design specialty and how did you discover your niche within the field? I'd love to hear your journey and insights! 🎨 From my screen to yours, happy designing! #UXDesign #UIDesign #UXUIDesigner #Designcommunity #Designresources #Specialization #DesignThinking #TSpecialist #UserExperience #UserResearcher #Design #CareerDevelopment #DesignJourney #DesignCareer #ProductDesign #ProductDesign #EarlyCareer #EarlyCareerDevelopment #VisualDesign #UIDesigner #UXUI #DesignTips #UXCommunity #UICommunity #InteractionDesign #niche
