As a procurement professional, negotiation is one of the toughest aspects of the job. Throughout your career you will find yourself negotiating on many topics such as costs, contract length, payment terms, delivery timings, volumes of orders etc. Professionals in this field may try to avoid conflict and not negotiate with potential and existing suppliers & vendors but to negotiate does not mean to be abrasive. If you do not ask, you do not get, so by not initiating negotiations it may cause you to spend more than your business needs to 💰. Unfortunately, you cannot just negotiate a price that suits you best, you must be reasonable. Research the market, gather competitor prices and explore trends within the industry, then you can find a level that you are happy with, and that vendors & suppliers will agree to. If you are looking for a procurement professional in your business that is a great negotiator, with extensive knowledge of the market, then contact Portfolio Procurement. We take your businesses core values, role requirements and budget and find you the perfect professionals that suit your role. Signs you have a high-functioning procurement team: 1. You hear about procurement’s great work from non-procurement colleagues 2. Procurement know the key business metrics and the projects procurement are doing are helping meet them. 3. Procurement drive projects forward 4. Colleagues come to procurement proactively with business issues 5. Procurement’s remit seems wider than ‘external spend’, and nobody is worried about this 6. Projects and priorities are determined by impact, not burning platforms and contract end dates 7. You know your stuff: your spend, your suppliers, your key contracts 8. Colleagues ask for your procurement team’s advice on topics that aren’t strictly procurement 9. The procurement team at all levels have technical skills 10. Your team have relationships with their supplier counterparts Not: ❌Projects determined by burning platforms and contract end dates ❌Your rank ❌The rank or title of the procurement team lead ❌Procurement’s presence in meetings ❌How many contract renewals happen ❌How much tech you have and how fancy it is What have I missed here? #procurement #teams #performance

Global Procurement Lead Commercial | Passionate Communication focussing on Creating Value for People | The World is complex - let’s keep things simple
🤝 You're in procurement? You must work a lot with numbers. Yes, that's true. Numbers are indeed a crucial part of my work in procurement. But you know what I work with even more often? People! 🤝 Procurement is a "People's Business". Especially in indirect procurement, it's all about relationship management. It's about building and nurturing strong partnerships. Because ultimately, it's the people behind the numbers that make procurement successful. In my role as Global Procurement Lead Commercial, I'm in daily contact with suppliers, internal stakeholders, and colleagues. It's about building trust, understanding needs, and collectively seeking optimal solutions. Relationships are the key to procurement success. Through close collaboration, we can negotiate the best terms, develop innovative solutions, and create value together. That's why I want to emphasize that procurement is not just about juggling numbers. It's about people, communication, and collaboration. When we're able to build and nurture good relationships, we can unlock the full potential of procurement. So let's not forget the "People's Business" in procurement and harness the power of interpersonal relationships to succeed together! I'm curious to hear how you experience relationship management in procurement. #ProcurementLife #PeopleInProcurement #SupplierPartnerships #ValueThroughPartnerships #ProcurementCommunity #ProcurementInsights

Thank you for your insightful post! It's unfortunate that some procurement professionals overlook the importance of relationship management. In many organizations, procurement managers encounter challenges due to late involvement and a lack of adherence to procurement processes by business stakeholders. Instead of addressing the underlying issues, blame is often shifted. To address this, it's crucial to understand why this disconnect occurs: - Is the procurement process unclear or not user-friendly for stakeholders? - Stakeholders may have other priorities, and communication with procurement may not be their primary focus. - Blaming stakeholders for not dedicating additional time to a procurement process they may not perceive as beneficial is counterproductive. Rather than assigning blame, let's focus on supporting our colleagues in the business. Improving communication and making the procurement process more accessible can help bridge the gap and drive success together. 😎

“13+ years’ Supply Chain Industry experience ⫸ Expert in Forecasting, Strategic Sourcing, Procurement, Bid and Contract Negotiation.
This is exactly what Procurement is.
Group Procurement Manager - A People focused Procurement professional | 10+ Years Experience | Advocate for sustainable & ethical practice
• WHAT IS PROCUREMENT? • I frequently have people asking me about the role of Procurement within business & where the role starts and stops. “Procurement is simply buying, right?” “Do I only come to you if I want to raise a PO?” Over the years I’ve seen hundreds of resources that go some way to explaining the profession, but none more effectively than the below image of the “procurement professional iceberg”. It illustrates the visible and hidden aspects of a procurement professionals role - highlighting the range of interchangeable skills and tasks needing to be acquired to support businesses. Now, I’m not to going to sit here and say all of these tasks & skills are applied simultaneously, but I hope this post raises the profile on the value Procurement can bring and how it’s so much more than simply ‘sourcing and negotiation’. Is there anything you’d add/remove from this list?
