Today’s Thursday tales is one from the archives: --- Dead Man’s Walk --- When I was applying for my first job fresh out of university, I discovered that my prospects were very limited, as a shy 21-year-old English Literature graduate … I must have applied for 100 jobs, and eventually found myself working for a private prison company. And so, I ended up spending my first day on the job, at the Old Bailey (London’s most infamous crown court), taking a tour of the prison cells. I was scared; very scared. And dressed in entirely the wrong outfit (think Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs), walking around very closely to the court supervisor. He made me walk through the famous “Dead Man’s Walk”, where the condemned took their last steps before being sent to the gallows. Supposedly the arches get smaller and smaller so that the “dead man” would be forced to focus on his one-way journey. Needless to say, this did not ease my fears! And what did I learn from all this? Thankfully, my job turned out to be based in a boring fluoro-lit office, where I would spend my days writing reports for the Home Office. I’ve come to think very fondly of my first two years of paid employment, in that unusual job. I believe that having a “first career”, before working in technology, has given me a different perspective. It’s so important to think about the people who will be using any new system, and what their working environment and daily routine involves. Work environments such as prisons and hospitals will never work in the same way that an office works, and technology needs to be massively adapted. This goes right from the type of devices (think rugged and mobile) to the login processes (such as thumbprints for shared devices) to the applications which are used (not your average Office 365). I’m curious to know about unusual jobs you have had, and what interesting lessons you learnt from them…

Positions of the elderly are not easily found. I have found that it is almost a test in futility to send a resume and get an interview invitation. Once they realize you are in mid 70s it is, "We'll be in touch." I understand that each company, business and enterprise need those with skills and energy to last for the long haul. It is indeed a fast paced and very technological world. When the suggestion is given to me to just work from home, remotely, I frown. Because I have done that up to and after my wife passed away. It places me right back into the solitude I am not wanting to live in day after day. I have even applied for teaching opportunities, but my degrees and credits are not acceptable because they are primarily ministry and theological in nature. I am indeed a part of a hidden group of experienced and knowledgeable folks, but it may be necessary to take a much lesser position at minimum wage. The best is to get another degree, and I have a few, but at an enormous tuition cost. Maybe seek a college or university that can give credit for the over 50 years of life experience, in addition to my Bachelors, Master and Doctoral degrees (including Paralegal).
