Eight Chicago-area teachers recently visited Costa Rica with Arboretum staff for a forest immersion experience. Now they're back, feeling inspired! They toured the Arboretum’s Gateway to Tree Science and Herbarium during a workshop, among other activities to create resources for their students about tree conservation. #TreeConservation #Education #OutdoorEducation

🔍🌀 FLUX Review Lens of the Week: Care-ing Capacity In ecology, “carrying capacity” is the number of living things a habitat can support without environmental degradation. Perhaps we're hitting a moment of “care-ing capacity.” The protracted poly-crises is stretching us to the edges of what we can care about (and for) before hitting personal and societal degradation. How much can we hold? How can stretch our fields of care safely? How might we renew our capacity? Especially in light of inadequate safety nets, underinvested care infrastructure, media amplification, and frayed social fabric. When in doubt, look to nature. A useful metaphor for our moment. 🔍 Grateful to the flux gang for honing this lens. Esp Erika Rice Scherpelz! 🌀 Read and subscribe to our systems-nerdery on Substack: https://lnkd.in/e6F38BGi

Kudos to the brilliant minds at the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), who are leading a remarkable initiative to restore seagrass meadows in the Thames estuary. Under the stewardship of ZSL conservation biologist Thea Cox, this UK project is a testament to the power of conservation and positive environmental action. The UK project sees dwarf eelgrass (Zostera noltii) planted in research beds across three intertidal sites using two techniques. One involves the transplantation of fully grown plants to new areas, where the plant can spread via rhizomes, and another involves the harvesting and planting of seeds from nearby donor meadows. In a world often dominated by challenging news, let's take a moment to celebrate the dedication and success of these scientists. This achievement underscores the importance of focusing on positive strides in environmental conservation. It's a reminder that amidst the challenges, there are stories of progress, hope, and tangible change. To more great environmental projects this year. #ConservationSuccess #PositiveNews #SeagrassRestoration #CelebrateSuccess

Happy to share a new publication from my student, just out in the BIOTROPICA journal. This work was done by an undergraduate student - a review paper on Coastal Dry Tropical Forest which. Based on the surveys of storm surge recorded during major hurricanes during the last 50 years, we define CDTFs as coastal terrestrial broadleaf forests on ground surfaces elevated up to 5 m above sea level and occurring within 5 km of the coast. This is an important work for the conservation and management of dry tropical forests, which may be the most threatened ecosystem in the world. https://lnkd.in/gkCYpEVu #conservation #tropicalplants #coastalcommunities #biodiversity #undergraduateresearch

Nice summary of an important principle
The 4 principles that should guide the design and redesign of the 15-minute city are: - Ecology. For a green and sustainable city. - Proximity. To live with reduced distance to other activities. - Solidarity. To create links between people. - Participation. Citizens should actively be involved in planning.
