A Natural Fit Vivobarefoot, in collaboration with material science company Balena, has unveiled a groundbreaking prototype trainer at the Biofabricate materials conference. 👟 This shoe is created from compostable materials, following "scan-to-print-to-soil" approach. The fully automated process allows users to scan their feet via phone, so that the shoes are then automatically 3D-printed for a customized fit. The footwear is designed to be composted in an industrial facility, challenging the traditional approach of mass-producing and disposing of shoes. promoting a sustainable, on-demand model. 🧩 Vivobarefoot envisions a future where shoes are tailored to individual feet, utilizing minimal materials to support foot health and reduce environmental impact. Kitty's design "roots," inspired by nature’s roots, creates a distinct left and right slide to give the sensation of roots growing naturally over the wearer's feet. 🌎 Exploring the Environmental Footprints: Birkenstock Arizona VS Keen Newport. 🌍 This semester, I was able to dive into a Life Cycle Assessment comparing two popular sandal brands. The key finding reveals how material choices and production processes influence the environmental impacts of products we use daily. 👞 Birkenstock is known for its use of natural and recyclable materials like cork and leather makes a compelling case for sustainability in footwear. Keen also focuses on durability but tends to use more synthetic materials causing different environmental challenges. A detailed analysis was made with SimaPro software where we examined every phase from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal. The circularity platform Recomme.co has joined forces with ACS (Advanced Clothing Solutions) to launch REPURPOSE, a platform, processor and innovation hub.   REPURPOSE will focus on clothing and footwear recovery, recycling, refurbishment and reuse, with support from UKFT.   Andrew Rough, CEO of ACS Clothing, said: “Through REPURPOSE, we aim to establish a seamless ecosystem where brands, retailers, and innovators come together to accelerate to a truly circular economy.” REPURPOSE aims to establish itself as the go-to solution for the UK clothing and footwear industry, offering efficient and effective connections with leading repurposing providers. The latest draft EU regulations calls for Industry to design garments with durability, recyclability, #circularity, use of recycled content and environmentally friendly process chemicals with full traceability. This presents a huge challenge to the #FashionIndustry to select and use appropriate trims in the garments and sewing threads plays a vital role.
