We are saddened by the passing of Michael Tracy, a trailblazing artist whose first-ever museum exhibition was at the McNay in 1971 and who most recently worked with us on a forthcoming exhibition, which opens in Spring 2025, featuring never-before-seen paintings from his personal collection. “Michael Tracy's considerable body of work will stand as a testament to his almost alchemical understanding of the fragility of the human condition and its relation to its environment. Happy birthday to the Russian artist Natalia Gontcharova, born on this day in 1881. A pioneering force in the Russian avant-garde, Gontcharova's brilliant works will be featured in 'Women Artists of the Ballets Russes: Designing the Legacy,' opening this October in the Tobin Theatre Arts Gallery. On June 13, 2024, we were pleased to bring the exhibition, 'de la Torre Brothers: Upward Mobility,' to life with fantastic events featuring collaborating brothers Einar and Jamex de la Torre. The de la Torre brothers returned to San Antonio to offer guests an inside look at the glassblowing process and a lively discussion of their evolving career and eye-opening exhibition with Museum curators. In honor of #PrideMonth, we celebrate the important contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community to art. 🏳️🌈 This week, we take a close look at the installation, Derelict Display x.ESC, by Juan Carlos Escobedo, who discussed the installation's connection to queerness: "From a very young age, I understood clothing as a way to express oneself and would be enthralled by how clothes projected an identity—from the characters in the soap operas my mom watched to the various virgin statues at the church we visited. I began using clothes as a way to project an identity of cleanliness, but also as a defense mechanism. I was already othered from a very young age because of my 'gay' mannerisms, so I leaned into wearing colorful clothing in order to separate myself from those that sought to harm me with their words. Funnily enough, it just made them angrier. I guess it's only natural now that the work has manifested in object that protect the body from aggression—literally and metaphorically."
