Authorities use the term "excited delirium" to describe the condition of some people who die. But some medical organizations say it’s useless or racist pseudoscience, Jamiles Lartey explains.

Adíos "excited delirium" as rationale. I'm glad to see the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) formally withdraw their endorsement and the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) stand against the term. From the article, "The emergency physicians’ 2009 report said excited delirium’s symptoms included unusual strength, pain tolerance and bizarre behavior and called the condition 'potentially life-threatening'". Also from the article, "Critics have called it unscientific and rooted in racism." Now is the time for reform of police training, given "the 14-year-old publication has shaped police training". Those who were trained with this term also need extensive training to rewire their practice regarding excessive force. 3 (basic) issues with the "definition": 1. unusual strength 🤔 2. unusual pain tolerance 🤔 3. bizarre behavior 🤔 Guess when people show these characteristics? 1. When they are scared for their lives. 2. When their bodies naturally go into defense mode. 3. Daily as an autistic individual--judged by a neurotypical person. Every part of this definition is discriminatory in nature. My two young boys (who are autistic) have a very high pain tolerance, which may be classified as "unusual". They also engage in stemming behaviors and echolalia, which are seen by some as "bizarre behavior". For them, for their future, for safety, this necessitates action. This act by the ACEP and the stance by NAME is a start. We must build off of this. This excuse must be removed as a justification for excessive force in writing, training, and practice. link to article: https://lnkd.in/gajVJqjN #AutismAdvocacy #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #Reform

"Forensic pathologists’ decisions are critical in police investigations and court proceedings as they determine whether an unnatural death of a young child was an accident or homicide. Does cognitive bias affect forensic pathologists’ decision-making? To address this question, we examined all death certificates issued during a 10-year period in the State of Nevada in the United States for children under the age of six. We also conducted an experiment with 133 forensic pathologists in which we tested whether knowledge of irrelevant non-medical information that should have no bearing on forensic pathologists’ decisions influenced their manner of death determinations. The dataset of death certificates indicated that forensic pathologists were more likely to rule "homicide" rather than "accident" for deaths of Black children relative to White children. This may arise because the base-rate expectation creates an a priori cognitive bias to rule that Black children died as a result of homicide, which then perpetuates itself. Corroborating this explanation, the experimental data with the 133 forensic pathologists exhibited biased decisions when given identical medical information but different irrelevant non-medical information about the race of the child and who was the caregiver who brought them to the hospital. These findings together demonstrate how extraneous information can result in cognitive bias in forensic pathology decision-making." https://lnkd.in/ddRAYxqB
