We work with #fbi Uniform Crime Data Reporting (#ucr) data and it's often unreliable. This is b/c the data comes from local #police departments and it's very easy for chiefs to manipulate the data for political reasons if they want crime to seem to be going or down.

Crime Trends Working Group Director John Buntin in Governing: "Right now, national data is old, hard to use and incomplete. Think about watching a football game but then not getting the score until nine months later. That’s where we are with crime data." https://lnkd.in/g7fd9xUF In a recent analysis, Crime Trends Working Group Founding Chair Rick Rosenfeld and member Janet Lauritsen explored the often conflicting nature of crime data. CCJ launched the group to explore and explain crime trends and improve the nation’s capacity to produce timely, accurate, and complete crime data: https://lnkd.in/gjuNqBNT

ICYMI: The FBI reported that incidents of violent crime have continued to decrease, dropping by 15% across the country. Crime rates always ebb and flow, and are influenced by so many complex national and hyperlocal factors. Getting tougher on crime with harsh penalties is a reactive and ineffective band aid solution to a deeply nuanced problem. We need to champion smart, timely, regionally-proven strategies to prevent crime and hold people accountable – in ways we KNOW will have a lasting impact on safety. Read more: https://loom.ly/SAzth8U

Emergence Certified S.AF.E. Situational Awareness for Employees, NRA Refuse to Be A Victim Instruction
Don't believe everything you hear, especially in an election year. It's a solid bet these numbers are about to explode, so stay alert. "First, the Department of Justice also provides qualitative data, that is called the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). This survey indicated that crime has increased 44% from 2021 to 2022. This is a remarkable increase, in fact, it is the largest increase since the survey in 2000." ..."It is said and surveys indicate that America “feels” as if crime is out of control. I proffer here the theory that in fact crime is out of control because the key assumptions lead us to that determination, and it is not feelings based. The data supports a new theoretical crime rate based on fact-based key assumptions that is now 858 per 100,000, which is the highest violent crime rate ever recorded in the United States."

Police-recorded crime data are of limited use. That is not an Irish problem, but caused by 'dark figure of crime' - the gap between the crime that occurs and that which is reported/detected and recorded by the police. Perhaps the Irish systems are/were particularly lacking, but if you actually want to explore the prevalence of, or trends in, different crime types, you must use data from victimisation surveys. For most crime types, all that police data will tell you is what the public choose to report and the police prioritise to respond to and record. https://lnkd.in/epFfkDCM

I always find that the disparity between policing stats and victimisation reports to be so telling of greater issues regarding criminality and the people it affects most. We often find that certain populations, usually ones of distinct national origins, ethnicities, or socioeconomic status, are less likely to resort to police intervention, which in time can lead to a greater rift between the community and policing.

Measuring the right things, in the right way is so important. In times of the headline it’s crucial to get behind the data as often that’s where the real story is. There is so much going on with this from the BBC, unpacking what is being reported by the ONS on crime statistics and what is included and not included. It is so important to get under the headline or you can fool yourself. The additional reporting team have been busy (I know because one of them told me 😃) #sceptical #statistics #prouddad https://lnkd.in/exQY_v62

With the release of Q4 data from the FBI data yesterday, many within the field of criminology are seeking answers to questions relating to the "close" of the 2023 calendar year. Nobody summarizes this information better than Jeff Asher. The link below will take you to his substack where he summarizes these trends, what they mean (by crime type for those interested), and what to look forward to. As always, take it with a grain of salt... https://lnkd.in/eB_hVQDT
