August is National Black Business Month! 🎉 This month provides us with an opportunity to celebrate and support the success and resilience of Black-owned businesses, not just within our local communities, but also on a national scale. The Month became nationally recognized in 2004 to acknowledge and support black-owned businesses across the nation, representing the country’s efforts to further diversity and equality. 💡Supporting Black-owned businesses is not only about promoting economic growth, but it's also an essential step towards challenging systemic inequalities. By uplifting and empowering Black entrepreneurs, we can help bridge the economic divide and create a more equitable society. 🌏🤝🏾 👉🏾 Investing in Black businesses means investing in the dreams, aspirations, and futures of countless individuals who have been historically underrepresented and marginalized. By consciously choosing to support these businesses, we can all play a part in promoting inclusivity, diversity, and social change. 🙌🏾💼 This month, we celebrate the successes of Black entrepreneurs that defied the odds and recognize the incredible contributions of Black entrepreneurs and businesses. #BlackBusinessMonth #SupportBlackBusinesses #BuyBlack #ShopBlack #BlackEntrepreneurs #Empowerment #Inclusion #NationalBlackBusinessMonth #SupportBlackEntrepreneurs #BlackOwnedBusiness

How Organizations Fail…and Succeed Reexamining The Value Proposition of The Black Non-Profit Organization As in ecology, organisms tend to expand and dominate the more powerful they become, human systems are very much the same. The organization superimposes power structures around capital, information, and opportunities — that’s what it’s all about. The common characteristic found in the book’s research highlights that authentic and capable leadership is responsible for good outcomes. It is simply illogical and void of any applied intelligence and evidence that detaching Black entrepreneurship from mainstream entrepreneurship will somehow close the racial wealth gap. In an ever-increasing intelligent technologies-driven world, globalization has added tremendously to the hyper-competitive environment and the complexity of doing business. So isolating Black nonprofit organizations to lead in a profit-oriented world, is plain stupidity! A data-driven decisioning framework must be articulated to provide a foundation for identifying challenges objectively and setting priorities. We must move to democratize these organizations, and intelligent technologies can assist greatly — with digital technologies in abundance this will be easy to do. The goal must be to select organizational leadership, strategies, and genuine processes, from the bottom up. So if we decide after careful examination and re-imagining that we still want Black organizations like the BBPA to represent us, we must build strategies and systems that will facilitate and promote authentic leadership, growth, and good governance. https://lnkd.in/gxiXYdj5

Why It Matters:
Maine Community Foundation is proud to celebrate local Black history makers this February. These Black leaders are championing racial equity across Maine while expanding or creating opportunities for creativity, justice, and success in our communities. Today, we are honored to feature Rose Barboza, Executive Director of Black Owned Maine. Founded in June 2020, Black Owned Maine provides Black businesses with the essential support they need to not only establish themselves, but also to thrive and grow. They empower Black entrepreneurs with the tools and resources to shape a brighter economic landscape in Maine. “I envision a Maine where there is equitable access to resources for everyone, regardless of race, culture, language, or ethnicity. This will be achieved through a series of educational and informational initiatives, empowering the disenfranchised communities,” said Rose. “We must distribute power in a way where not one class or race makes decisions for everyone else. I believe Maine has a unique opportunity to make this a reality.” Rose is inspired by the individuals and collectives that continue to show up every day despite the circumstances they may be facing, as well as those who refuse the current system and create their own pathways to success and happiness. Black Owned Maine was a 2023 BIPOC Fund grantee, and Rose was awarded a 2021 Investing in Leaders of Color (ILOC) grant. Thank you to Rose and Black Owned Maine for sustaining and innovating an ecosystem for Black entrepreneurs in Maine! 📷 Photo courtesy Rose Barboza. #maine #mainecommunityfoundation #mainecf #blackhistorymonth #blackownedmaine #blackowned #bom #rosebarboza
