On June 26, an attempt to depose President Luis Arce was led by the head of Bolivia’s Army, who directed armored vehicles to breach the presidential palace in La Paz. The coup failed to garner support from other military units, and the rebelling soldiers quickly surrendered. President Arce has since dismissed the Army commander, now detained, as thousands of his supporters rallied in the capital. President Arce has been grappling with a contentious power struggle with former President Evo Morales, his onetime mentor, which has diverted attention from Bolivia’s worsening economic crisis. Despite these internal challenges, regional leaders swiftly united in condemning the coup attempt and supported Arce. In last week’s edition of #WeeklyAsado, we examined the regional response to the failed coup in Bolivia. "The Chinland Council didn't come out of nowhere. It's basically been the result of almost three years of negotiations since the military coup, and there's been different iterations or versions of this that have tried to be established." During an event hosted by the The Stimson Center, John Indergaard and Zo Tum Hmung discuss what the restructuring of governance in Chin State means for Myanmar’s resistance. #politics Former NATO Secretary General from 2009 – 2014, an economist, Anders Fogh Rasmussen of Denmark, while Barack Obama was president of the United States, is now squarely blaming Obama for the ongoing debacles in the Middle East, Ukraine, and Taiwan, which is threatening to collapse the western-led world order. Rasmussen wants America to be the world’s policeman, the strongman, Pax Americana, akin to Pax Romana, to keep the peace through strength seeing the world as a Hobbesian war of all against all. He may be misreading geopolitics, as economists usually tend to do, rendered unsophisticated by linear thinking having been trained on linear regressions, attempting to fit any and all data to a straight line to forecast the world to how it will be as if it will always remain how it was, akin to a domesticated horse with blinders on running ahead eating hay rendered unable to look sideways where the grass is green. We now live at a moment of paradigmatic shift in the history of civilization when we ought to be asking why cannot the world be different? Obama was elected to make a transformative vision reality, where the world does not need a policeman. American-led world order is not about paternalism nor is America. We are not the world’s government. United States of America was founded on the premise of self-government in 1776 and it expects not only the United States but Europe, Middle East, Russia, and China to conduct themselves responsibly as the equals all the world’s member nations were meant to be in the global civil society of nations when the United Nations was founded after World War II under international rule of law whose purpose is no such war again and human rights enumerated in the Universal Declaration (UDHR). Why is none of it working? America made its share of mistakes but it does not mean others should also in an international system of self-governance of first among equals. Nations, just as children who grow up to be mature and responsible adults when given responsibility for themselves, also grow up to be responsible societies and governments when left alone to fend for themselves. United States is there as a safety net, a trampoline, to hold you when you fall until you learn how not to fall too frequently to your own detriment. The old world must grow up and rapidly learn how to get along in civility and reason.

Coinciding with the 26th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, Marisa McGlinchey contributed to our research series on national reconciliation with a publication titled "Peace without Reconciliation in Northern Ireland: Lessons for Libya?" 📌 The paper delves into how Northern Ireland transitioned from conflict in the late '90s, examining the Good Friday Agreement's peace process and the country's strides towards political and social reconciliation. While the Agreement ushered in relative peace, it fell short in addressing crucial issues such as reckoning with the past, grappling with legacies and identities, and acknowledging the conflicting narratives surrounding the conflict and its roots. Today, genuine reconciliation remains an aspiration, with Northern Ireland's communities still divided. Given the global recognition of the Irish peace process as a model for reconciliation, albeit imperfect, the author outlines seven key lessons applicable for contemplating other conflict zones, including Libya. The paper is available in English and Arabic. 📎Remember to check out our full series on national reconciliation at: https://bit.ly/4aIod5N. This initiative is funded by the European Union. In an analysis I penned for The National Interest in 2016, my insight for the next US president involved challenging the “Africa Rising” narrative for its oversimplification. Now almost eight years later, here are my updated views on United States-Africa relations, where optimism is constantly being checked by the sobering reality of time’s relentless progression. #foreignpolicy #foreignaffairs #analysis #policy #internationalrelations #military #development #unitedstates #africa https://lnkd.in/gxB2CiCF

💡 My first contribution to international media! Mark Rutte will become the next NATO chief. What can we expect from Rutte, based on his 14 years steering Dutch politics through a variety of crises? In this article for The Conversation, I argue that Rutte will need his long-term experience in coalition politics and crisis management to lead NATO in this era of polycrisis. To learn more about 'Teflon Mark', Trump whisperers and elephants that block your views, read my contribution here: https://lnkd.in/eGPxZ9EJ Universiteit Leiden - Instituut Bestuurskunde
