We are thrilled today to host, in collaboration with the Institute for Humane Studies, a graduate student papers workshop in the realm of health topics! These sessions bring together scholars from the Knee Center with advanced graduate students to provide feedback and further opportunities for progress. We welcome the scholars: Angela Shoulders, Hyesung Oh, Sukriti Beniwal, Michael Schemenaur, and Catherine Falvey to Morgantown, WV and look forward to seeing where their research takes them in their career! Keep an eye out for these bright scholars' work in the next year on the job market and in upcoming journal publications! 👀✍

Shishir Shakya, Alicia Plemmons, and Conor Norris recently published a study on the licensing of military spouses, studying changes in licensing reforms at the state-level to understand the effect on employment and the barriers to continuous employment. The full scope of the barriers spouses face while needing to relocate may not be captured within data analysis, but in this study focusing in on nurses specifically, Shakya et al. find a significant 12% probability that a registered nurse will move near an army base and continue working rather than leaving the labor market in the wake of a state's full licensing recognition policy for military spouses. This builds evidence of what policies are helping ease this transition and inform best policymaking practices for military families. Find their paper here: https://lnkd.in/edU49-z4

Next in the Emerging Scholars lineup, Jeanna Kenney and Tulasiram Nepal! These scholars presented their work on licensing and regulation within the real estate and physician assistants markets. Their desire to improve their academic pursuits and strive for results that reflect a truth within these markets is inspiring. We'd like to highlight all of these scholars for their dedication to their work!

Yesterday marked the start of the in-person sessions for the 2024 Emerging Scholars Conference here in Morgantown, WV! We first welcomed Tanner Corley of the University of Alabama to the podium for his long standing research on barber and beautician licensing. This event seeks to provide a platform to bring together new and distinguished scholars with the goal of sharing knowledge and advancing ideas, cultivating long lasting networks of research colleagues, and providing a stage for emerging scholars to amplify the findings of their research. Mentors are matched with scholars to provide feedback and guidance on their presented work and other aspects of these emerging scholars' academic and career pursuits. The Knee Center thanks our co-host, Institute for Humane Studies, for their sponsorship in putting on this wonderful event.
