🚀 In case you missed last week’s report, here’s a glimpse into the future of the UK automotive industry!
The automotive sector is important for UK foundation industries due to its substantial consumption of materials like metals, glass, plastics, and composites. To compete globally, UK automotive manufacturers must meet the necessary criteria for performance, durability and sustainability.
With the funding from the Resilient Recovery Programme, provided by UKRI’s Transforming Foundation Industries Challenge, delivered by Innovate UK, EPSRC and ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council, the project investigated the sector’s future with UK automotive OEMS. The report found four key insights:
🚗 Lightweight alternatives are in demand to emphasise mass reduction in vehicles, urging the need to scale sustainable production for integration into mass-produced vehicles.
⛓ Closed-loop supply chains are gaining traction to enhance automotive material sustainability, driving the search for suppliers offering higher recycled content and recyclable potential.
🔋 With the surge in electric vehicles, reducing production emissions is paramount, fuelling the demand for suppliers demonstrating renewable energy usage throughout their processes.
💡 Consumer demands and profitability steer manufacturers, necessitating cost-effective material innovations. Evolving regulatory policies alongside innovation is crucial for the feasible adoption of emerging technologies.
