BEHAVIOR BEATS TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES. Or does it? 🤔 When I started my internal audit journey almost exactly 20 years ago, I had to learn one million new things at a time (I still have to 😂, that´s the greatest part of our profession). But next to all the technical stuff, methodology, documentation, standards, and of course, understanding the ever-changing business, I remember very clearly that shortly after my start I said: “Internal audit is 30% understanding the business, 20% debits and credits, and 50% diplomacy”. Fast-forward to 2024. Businesses – and internal auditors – have a couple of additional topics to care about when comparing to 2004, to say the very least. Topics have emerged on the risk spectrum that might have been lurking in the background 20 years back but hadn´t surfaced yet. Complexity has risen accordingly. One thing hasn´t changed, though – at least in my humble opinion: while everything starts with business acumen, and technical competencies obviously still are a must, it´s the behavioral part that makes or breaks the life of an internal auditor. Call it diplomacy, emotional intelligence, or whatever term you prefer: without a strong sense of how to deal with the countless different people we meet during our work, we won´t get far in our profession. ➡ How we audit is what can be read in our audit reports. ➡ How we behave during an audit is what will be remembered. We all have different views about what´s key to succeed in internal audit. I believe that it starts with being present (as the opposite of the silo auditor), and it ends with being authentic – we should never stop practicing and getting better in our best role: being ourselves. Technical competencies are a commodity. Virtually everyone can acquire them. But you are the only person in the world who can be, and behave, exactly as you do. Let´s start with ourselves and our own behavior when investing in our competencies. #internalaudit #behavior #authenticity

🔍 Enhancing Self-Confidence: A Crucial Skill for Audit Professionals 📈 In a recent Psychology Today article by Robert N. Johansen, Ph.D., the importance of self-confidence, particularly in acknowledging and accepting one's weaknesses, is eloquently discussed. As audit professionals, fostering self-confidence isn't just about projecting strength; it's about embracing our vulnerabilities and leveraging them as opportunities for growth. ✅ Embracing Vulnerability: Recognizing and accepting our weaknesses is fundamental in the audit profession. It allows us to address areas for improvement and fortify our skills. ✅ Effective Communication: Transparency about our shortcomings fosters trust and credibility with stakeholders. Whether it's admitting an oversight or seeking clarification, open communication is paramount in audit engagements. ✅ Building Resilience: Recovering from setbacks is inevitable in the audit landscape. By cultivating self-confidence, we equip ourselves with the resilience needed to navigate challenges and emerge stronger. ✅ Continuous Learning: Just as Dr. Johansen emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance, audit professionals must prioritize ongoing learning and development. Embracing a growth mindset fuels our professional evolution and enhances our effectiveness. As we strive for excellence in the audit profession, let's remember that self-confidence isn't about perfection—it's about progress. By embracing our vulnerabilities and cultivating a confident mindset, we empower ourselves to excel in our careers and make meaningful contributions to the organizations we serve. #AuditProfession #SelfConfidence #ProfessionalGrowth#CareerDevelopment #AuditSkills #internalaudit

🌞 Making a Difference in Auditing 🌞 I've realized that the best way to add value to management and the organization isn't just to point out problems, but to also bring #solutions before they even ask about it. Being proactive is #key. When we find an issue and already have a solution ready, it shows we're not just critics, but also problem solvers. This approach builds trust, saves time, and can even lead to new, better ways of doing things. So, to my fellow auditors: let's be proactive. Let's find solutions, not just problems. That's how we make a real #difference. Do you agree? #internalaudit #internalauditors #HCT #IIA

A great piece from ACCA about the audit and accounting talent crunch, joining a large body of work including research of my own, that highlights the importance of work-life balance - but most importantly appropriate remuneration. Audit/accounting firms seem to be attempting to defy the economic theory that when there is high demand and constrained supply (accounting grads) - salaries should go up.

🧲Attract, 👥️Engage, 🤝Retain - a concerted effort to address talent crunch and achieve sustained growth and impact in the audit profession For several years, the audit profession faced persistent challenges in attracting and retaining talents in the face of a global pandemic and changing expectations from a new generation of young budding auditors and early career auditors. To address this phenomenon and to support IFAC in understanding the gravity of the situation, ACCA and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand drew insights from more than 6,500 finance professionals through a series of roundtables and survey across the globe. Five themes emerged from the research to solve the current crisis: 👉Providing a supportive environment with focus on work-life balance 👉Fair remuneration to reflect the intensive workload at peak periods 👉Nurturing career lattice and access to a variety of work 👉Purpose driven focus in sustainability assurance and reporting 👉Embrace advanced technologies to attract technology savvy talents To read the full report - https://lnkd.in/gvCKNz7e.. 🙏Great appreciation to members, contacts in the audit profession, and academics who have supported us in completing the survey to provide these amazing insights.
