It’s special to witness the beauty of unity among people. The recent energy that student athletes and fans brought to Purdue University’s historic #MarchMadness run. Purdue’s collaborative event with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Indianapolis Motor Speedway to host an education-filled viewing party for the #TotalSolarEclipse. The establishment of the Tyler Trent Pediatric Cancer Research Center within the Purdue Institute for Cancer Research. We can take giant leaps when we do this together. As we look toward #PurdueDayOfGiving on April 24, I wanted to highlight 3 special initiatives taking place on campus right now: 1.) Purdue has one of the highest campus housing utilization rates in the #BigTen. To accommodate this high volume, Purdue is constructing a brand-new residence hall that is specifically designed for students who are a part of the Data Mine. This will be an 8-story facility with 896 beds. The Data Mine is an interdisciplinary living-learning community open to students from all across campus. 2.) For the first time since 1961, Purdue’s most historic building – University Hall – will be undergoing a much-needed renovation. The new concept for the renovation will reflect the initial floorplan from University Hall’s opening in 1871, which is more of an open concept to foster collaboration among students. This building was funded as part of John Purdue’s founding donation and is where he spent the final day before his passing. 3.) Purdue is establishing a collaborative building between the Purdue University College of Pharmacy and the Purdue School of Nursing. There has been a tremendously increasing need for nurses and pharmacists in #Indiana, while investing in interdisciplinary skill-building among pharmacists and nurses in terms of both patient care and research. Let's take a closer look at our milestones: 🚀 **New Leadership and Campus Expansion:** Kari Takahashi stepped into the role of GRAUC Executive Director, ushering in an era of fresh perspectives and strategic vision. Meanwhile, the University of Minnesota Rochester marked significant milestones with a move to a new downtown campus at University Square and the appointment of Dr. Stephen Lehmkuhle as the first chancellor. 🌱 **Advancing Education Initiatives:** GRAUC remained committed to educational advocacy, supporting the growth of local partners like RCTC, UMR, and WSU-R. Notably, GRAUC played a pivotal role in securing legislative funding for the CTECH project, fostering career technical education opportunities for the community. 📈 **Strategic Restructuring:** In 2009-2010, GRAUC embarked on a journey of strategic introspection, refining our mission and organizational structure to better serve as a community advocacy agency. With a leaner board and streamlined committees, we positioned ourselves for greater flexibility and responsiveness in driving impactful initiatives. 🔍 **Advocating for Higher Education:** Our efforts culminated in advocating for the inclusion of public higher education projects in the sales tax reauthorization, aiming to directly benefit Greater Rochester residents. From securing funding for UMR's permanent campus to advancing collaborative projects like CTECH and STEM Village, we navigated legislative channels to realize our vision. 💡 **Looking Ahead:** As we celebrate past achievements, our focus remains steadfast on advocating for the passage of the sales tax referendum in the fall of 2012. Together, we will continue to champion initiatives that empower our community through accessible, quality higher education opportunities. Join us as we write the next chapter of GRAUC's legacy, driving positive change and transformative impact in Greater Rochester and beyond. Student Voices Unleashed! Addie's impactful essay, 'Our Voices — How I Found Mine, and Why We Need Yours in This Fight Too,' takes us on a journey from shock to activism, revealing the urgent need for change in education. As a tenth-grader during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, Addie grappled with the overwhelming realities of systemic issues, from homelessness to racial injustice and beyond. "I found my voice and made it my mission in life to ensure every child and every adult has a platform to use their voice for what matters to them. Especially every student. Not just performatively, not just in theory - in reality. Because it should be: nothing about us without us," Addie passionately asserts. She emphasizes the power and self-determination students should have in shaping the education system and addressing societal issues. But the question remains: Are all voices truly heard? Addie believes in the principle "Nothing about us without us," but acknowledges the long road ahead in turning theory into practice.
