Don't move the butter dish. We humans spend most of our time in system 1 thinking mode. That's when we're acting on autopilot. We get so used to where things are, or how to go about our business, that our intuitive processes take over. Our decision making is done so quickly it's almost instantaneous. It's the reason why you should never completely change a website's user interface. Or redesign an app without taking existing use into account. People have become so accustomed to how to use these digital tools, assuming they're regulars, that they've stopped thinking consciously about it. It also applies to branding (just ask WHSmith), customer experiences and processes. Change these too much at your peril. Customers won't necessarily blame you, or complain (that would be something). They'll likely simply become frustrated, quickly, and leave. If you want to test this out, take the butter dish in your kitchen and move it from its usual spot to the other side of the room. I guarantee most of us will keep going to the old spot to grab the butter many, many times (frustrated) before the change kicks in. #behaviouralscience #system1thinking (P.S.
