Should you hire perm or temp-to-perm? You’ve decided, “Hey world – I want a full-time employee and I want one now!” This is the road most typically travelled and for good reason. The net you cast for a perm employee is wide, and clearly the hope is to catch the interest of great candidates. Temp-to-perm, on the other hand, means that you may have a harder time accessing those who are already employed full-time. However, while finding these candidates might be harder, there is a real plus for temp-to-perm when it comes to personality and cultural fit. It allows both sides to test the waters before taking the plunge. If you have the time to conduct a search for a full-time employee, then this may be the best option. Pitfalls of hiring part-time engineers Typically, companies look for part-time specialist because of a lack of funding or tasks for full-time employee. However, except for the nuances of traditional hiring, part-time engineer recruitment has a few more stumbling blocks to consider. 1. Availability. If you don't specify the working hours and their number, it'll cause synchronization problems, especially regarding meetings. 2. Minimize interdependency inside the team. If the tasks of your part-time devs and full-time team are interdependent, the delay of the question-feedback process will grow and significantly slow down the work. 3. The risk of burnout. Often, people look for a part-time job as a side hustle and overestimate their abilities. Gradually, their performance will decrease because of exhaustion because it's physically impossible to work this much. And all the time spent on onboarding gets wasted. 4. The need for ingenuity with the tasks. Part-time employees give you part of their potential. Their dedication and attention are mainly focused on the full-time project, so that you won't get any innovative solutions or suggestions. 5. Factors that impact your long-term cooperation. Find out the reasons for having a side hustle as much as possible. There is always a possibility that they will take on more workloads on another project or find a full-time job shortly, and you will have to look for another employee.
