Few golf complexes in recent memory have created buzz like Cabot Citrus Farms in Brooksville, FL. And the only thing more wild than its collection of stunning holes is the land’s history. Thirty years ago, World Woods was slated to be the first true American build-it-and-they-will-come golf resort. Its Japanese ownership group had grand plans for seven courses, world-class practice facilities and onsite lodging. It was the talk of the golf world when it opened, and then suddenly, it was left for dead. Rick Kelso has been there from the beginning, and he’s survived personal tragedy and professional heartache to see the vision finally fulfilled at the hands of the Cabot Golf Group. In the latest TGJ Film, we head to Brooksville to understand where World Woods went wrong, what it took to keep the dream alive and why the finished product was worth taking the long way home. This chart illustrates what I- and others - have been saying about appellations for decades An appellation is an attempt at brand-creation: the making of a name that target consumers will recognise and look out for and possibly even be ready to buy at a higher price To succeed, any brand, in any sector, has to be distinctively different and it has to have the means to establish that point of difference For most wine regions, this is provided by the critical/market recognition of one or more key producers Regnié has never had a 'key' producer. It lacked one when it was given its AOC in 1988, and never subsequently acquired one. As the Beaujolais regional site - https://lnkd.in/ewM4r9cU - says, its wines are 'light, easy to drink... maturing quickly' There are many hundreds of appellations like this across the world, and new ones are being created all the time. If they ceased to exist, the world would need little adjustment to accommodate their absence

Robert Joseph ‘s reflection is spot on: appellations are attempts to create territorial brands that often owe their success to a single producer. As Paul Wagner says, they must be “small enough to mean something, big enough to tell people about it.” I would add that if we want to create a brand tied to the terroir, we need to plant and promote indigenous grapes. Furthermore, to establish a territorial brand, we should identify a regional style, even in winemaking techniques, and stick to it. Does this mean the rise of new rentiers exploiting the best vineyards, making it worthwhile to produce DOCG wines? Probably. For others, it’s possible to step outside the appellation’s regulations, use varieties best suited to the soil and the market, apply innovative cellar techniques, and develop their own wine style under a proprietary commercial brand. Producers and consumers would benefit, with less confusion associated with the current (ab)use of territorial brands, which often appear more as a historical accident than an intentional production choice. #wine #winebusiness #winemarketing #marketing
