All streaming TV is becoming "mid-TV", categorised by high production values but unsophisticated plots. This is interesting in the context of the evolution of "taste". The blurring of high and low culture is a long-term trend. In mid-TV, we arguably see an end point, where the production values from high cultural TV are combined with the plotting of low cultural TV. But do TV execs underplay the role that "distinction" plays in people's lives? As we join the rest of the world to mark Television Day (November 21), it is time to reflect on the changing and important role that Television (including Cable TV) has played over the years. Back in December 1996, when the United Nations General Assembly set aside November 21 as World Television Day, the purpose was to “give recognition to the increasing impact television has had on decision-making by bringing various conflicts and threats to peace and security to the world’s attention.” Much has changed since then. While Television still "brings various conflicts and other happenings to the world’s attention, many of the ethical considerations that defined early (television) broadcasting have been sacrificed over time. It is no longer about fairness and accuracy. Back then, no topic was off the table. Right now, the fear of backlash – either from the audiences, advertisers, owners, or lobbyists has resulted in very biased reporting. Editorial decisions are based on the numbers (audiences and adverts) and not on the need to inform. But the situation is not yet out of hand. Journalists (not political commentators/presenters) need to look in the mirror and ask themselves the hard question(s): Whose watchdog am I?
