🎥 Great to share my insights on BBC News this morning discussing the evolving dynamics within the diamond industry. While the demand for lab-grown diamonds is increasingly on the up, and demand for natural diamonds subdued, it begs the question: what implications does this hold for the natural diamond market longer term, as supply starts to deplete? My new study explores recharging aquifers as a sustainable approach to groundwater management, utilizing data and citations to examine the methods, benefits, challenges, and potential impacts of aquifer recharge. It mainly focuses on ways to minimize evaporation and maximize ground absorption. Specifically, this study draws its findings and recommends processes from Kabul’s rich and practical approaches to groundwater recharging of its recent past. https://lnkd.in/ee3y4-ni

Every single challenge America faces have dozens of Industry and Professional organizations who could be part of the solution. Your country needs you.
From the science journal Nature an alarm about the world’s groundwater supply. “the global pace and prevalence of local groundwater declines are poorly constrained, because groundwater levels have not been synthesized at the global scale. Here we analyse groundwater-level trends for 170,000 monitoring wells and 1,693 aquifer systems in countries that encompass approximately 75% of global groundwater withdrawals. We show that rapid groundwater-level declines (>0.5 m year−1) are widespread in the twenty-first century, especially in dry regions with extensive croplands. Critically, we also show that groundwater-level declines have accelerated over the past four decades in 30% of the world’s regional aquifers. This widespread acceleration in groundwater-level deepening highlights an urgent need for more effective measures to address groundwater depletion. Our analysis also reveals specific cases in which depletion trends have reversed following policy changes, managed aquifer recharge and surface-water diversions, demonstrating the potential for depleted aquifer systems to recover.” More from NYT https://lnkd.in/eUmTQgdT

Cutting Edge PFAS Treatment Technology Thanks to Dr. Grant Carey and the group of true Thought Leaders that conducted this research and have graciously given the remediation industry open access to the publication in the REMEDIATION Journal!! This work reports: A down-gradient Colloidal Activated Carbon (CAC) permeable barrier was successful in containing PFAS on a site modeled after a large plume on a South Dakota site Longevity expected to be >30-40 years with no O&M Any future injections, if required, may be limited Source area/near source area CAC treatment can prevent mass flux to groundwater
Many thanks to my co-authors for another interesting paper that has just been published as open access at the Remediation Journal: https://lnkd.in/egPBaQqD This paper analyzes three potential alternatives for using colloidal activated carbon at an AFFF-impacted site, for the in-situ remediation of groundwater with high PFAS concentrations. Porewater Solutions' proprietary reactive transport model, the In-Situ Remediation Model or ISR-MT3DMS, was used to model various PFAS remedial alternatives. And the journal has selected our paper to provide the cover image for the Winter 2024 issue of the Remediation Journal (see below).

Global #GroundWaterDepletion & How to Fix It ! "In a newly published study, a team of data scientists, water specialists and policy experts compiled the first global-scale dataset of groundwater levels. The researchers analyzed millions of groundwater level measurements in 170,000 wells located in over 40 countries and mapped how groundwater levels have changed over time. The study has two main findings: (1) Rapid groundwater depletion is widespread around the world and the rates of decline have accelerated in recent decades, with levels falling by 20 inches or more yearly in some locations. (2) Second, however, the research also reveals many cases where deliberate actions halted groundwater depletion. The results show that societies are not inevitably doomed to drain their groundwater supplies, and that with timely interventions, this important resource can recover." Today our Groundwater Drops term is Allogenic Recharge! Allogenic recharge is an important aspect of groundwater management, especially in regions where groundwater resources are being depleted due to excessive extraction or other factors.
