A Journalist's Tale of Survival and Triumph (1) Within the unstable field of journalism, where uncertainty and hardship are omnipresent companions, Ayaba Philips's story is a remarkable illustration of the efficacy of optimism. Ayaba, a human interest writer who is passionate about finding the truth, encountered a challenge that changed her life and demonstrated the potential life-saving effects of having an optimistic outlook. Her career had been forged by her daring reporting, which frequently involved traveling to isolated areas to unearth tales that others were afraid to investigate. Her reputation for resiliency was growing, but she was put to the test of her optimism during a terrifying experience in an extremely isolated community. While investigating human rights abuses in a community, Ayaba and her colleagues were ambushed by a miscreants. They were taken hostage, and the situation quickly escalated into a high-stakes negotiation with little hope for a swift resolution. Isolated and cut off from the outside world, Ayaba team faced daily threats and uncertainty. Ayaba's unwavering optimism served as a beacon of hope for her colleagues amidst their fear and despair. She remained unwavering in her belief that they would make it through and be saved. She made the conscious decision to concentrate on potential solutions rather than giving in to hopelessness, which is why her optimistic outlook was not a naive denial of their dangerous situation. Ayaba optimism took many forms. As a morale-booster, she told her team about previous rescues and reminded them of their loved ones who were waiting for them. Her capacity to maintain composure under duress had a stabilizing effect, lowering anxiety and promoting a sense of camaraderie among the hostages. In order to keep them feeling somewhat normal, she urged them to participate in little, everyday routines, which turned out to be extremely important in maintaining their mental health. #thepowerofoptimism #thepowerofhope #thepowerofpositivity

Is there a job worth your life? This question may not be surprising, but it is undoubtedly one of the saddest news I have read, which highlights toxic work cultures, bullying, and mental harassment, all of which are prevalent in an industry that is meant to represent the voice of every other industry. This industry attracts young and talented individuals who aspire to make the world a better place with their bold stories and work tirelessly to be the voice of the voiceless. I do not know the deceased journalist personally, but I cannot fathom the pain his family, friends, and colleagues who still work in the same place and building must be feeling. Over time, I have realised that speaking up for oneself can sometimes lead to unpleasant outcomes. However, being brave and standing up for yourself is crucial because nobody else will do it for you. It’s essential to be courageous and carefully choose your battles. While being passionate about your work is necessary, it’s equally important to recognise when someone is crossing the line and affecting your self-respect and dignity. Every job can be stressful, especially when you are passionate about your career and giving your all. However, it is essential to prioritise your mental health. You cannot achieve anything if you are mentally unfit. Our mental health is crucial for our overall well-being and career success. May he rest in peace, and hope the people fighting for him get due justice 🙏 A reminder to ourselves: “We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own ‘to-do’ list.” —Michelle Obama, former First Lady. https://lnkd.in/g8FUTBCW #journalism #journalists #media #workculture #toxicworkplace #toxicleadership #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters

Epic storms. Floods. Fires. Tornadoes. Covid’s comeback. Mass violence and environmental trauma affect more and more of us. How do we respond as journalists and as survivors? What does it look like to participate in trauma informed reporting, interviewing, and responding? As subscribers, viewers, and listeners, what should we expect from our news sources? This thoughtful Trauma-Informed Journalism Toolkit is one of many resources available from Campaign for Trauma-Informed Policy & Practice (CTIPP) I highly recommend the full complement of free tool kits, videos, and the monthly CTIPP call. Build your knowledge base on trauma, trauma-informed policies and practices, resiliency, and advocacy by using and sharing these well-researched, well-written written, and professionally-produced resources. FOUNDER & CEO: KDPM Equity Institute I Certified Emotional Intelligence, Neuro-Leadership Coach | As seen on: CITYLINE, OWN, Forbes, Essence
“Content warning: This story discusses news coverage of death by suicide. Media coverage of the tragic death of a former Toronto school principal raises serious concerns about responsible reporting on suicide, as well as informed coverage of how conversations about systemic racism continue to unfold in education and other institutions. We recognize that newsroom leaders daily make difficult decisions on complex stories. However, as journalism educators – and practitioners – whose research focuses on news coverage of mental health and on how newsroom composition affects editorial decisions, we believe it’s important to highlight how coverage of this story falls short of established journalistic standards and principles.” We're in critical times and we need journalism that can awaken our critical thinking and sense of responsibility when it comes to human equity. I commend the authors who named the harm caused. I hope editorial managers and leaders with systemic power show up and model with action what accountability looks like when it comes to leading with human and cultural equity. Thank you Gavin Adamson, Sonya Fatah and Asmaa Malik for your leadership. #humanityfirst #HumanEquity#DiversityEquityInclusion #CulturalEquity #EquitableLeadership
