An absolute pleasure to be part of the DEI symposium within the Make A Difference Summits today. So many great ideas shared. Some takeaways… - in a time of polarisation think about how we, within DEI, are also contributing to the debate rather than bringing people together - success in DEI is down to a collaborative effort across the business not just one interested team - set a high level strategy centrally but delivered regionally with local leadership buy-in - data is important but not the be-all. Listen to stories, spot trends, think qualitative as well as quantitative. Also remember people’s feelings are data points too! - accountability at all levels is vital - random acts of diversity don’t create change - listen to all stakeholders in your business And my particular favourite (not provoked at all…) - the investors into businesses can have a BIG influence in driving the right questions and behaviours 💰📈🙋♀️ Oh plus some excellent discussions around ERGs, allyship, employee listening, and intersectionality from this fabulous (yes all women) panel Kulbir Shergill, Shelley O’Connor, Sofi Musleh , Claire Wilkinson (MCIPD)

"I'm just going for it while leaving room for moments I don't see coming." This has been my daily mantra for the past couple of years. Embracing it has led me on an incredible journey.  I decided that no matter how scary it was, I would start standing ten toes down in my authenticity as a Black woman and healthcare leader. And, honestly, start living out my name. I have to have this name for a reason, right?  🤷🏾♀️ As I begin to take leaps of "Faith," leveraging my strengths and lived experience as a Black woman to create innovative solutions that advance equity in healthcare.  Something happened: 🗣️I created and led an innovative sponsorship program focused on increasing the representation of Black women in senior leadership positions. What started as a grassroots initiative was adopted as an organizational initiative. 🌎I got opportunities to speak about this program on many highly respected platforms and even at a global conference.   💰I leveraged those opportunities to hone my craft and messaging as a professional speaker and booked 5 figure speaking engagements and workshops. (Lawd! I meant to say 4 figure speaking engagements but leaving this here cuz…speaking it into existence 🙌🏾) 💪🏾The confidence I gained from that led me to organize and host the inaugural Black Women in Healthcare Leadership Symposium. We have over 125 Black women Healthcare professionals, leaders, and clinicians registered.  And Sis even got some corporate sponsors.  (Pssst: It’s happening this Friday - Are you coming??) Amidst all of this, something truly unexpected happened. As of last week my work was published in Management in Healthcare - A peer-reviewed journal! This is something I never anticipated, but I’m SO proud to share it with you today.  And baby, lissen, I know this is only the beginning for me. 💁🏾♀️ Sis, there is so much beauty in leading from a place of strength and authenticity. There are so many doors just waiting to open for you, doors that you can’t even begin to imagine.  Just take the leap, Beloved! Continuing my tradition of Sunday shout-outs of amazing leadership I’ve encountered, I’ve got a good one today. 📢 ESPECIALLY in the context of one of my favorite topics: women in leadership. Major spoiler though - it's not a woman. To set the stage, consider this from McKinsey’s 2023 Women in the Workplace Report: "Myth: The biggest barrier to women’s advancement is the ‘glass ceiling’ Reality: The ‘broken rung’ is the greatest obstacle women face on the path to senior leadership For the ninth consecutive year, women face their biggest hurdle at the first critical step up to manager. This year, for every 100 men promoted from entry level to manager, 87 women were promoted (Exhibit 2). And this gap is trending the wrong way for women of color: this year, 73 women of color were promoted to manager for every 100 men, down from 82 women of color last year. As a result of this “broken rung,” women fall behind and can’t catch up." And as we enter Black History Month, look at the data for women of color - Black women in particular. Do you know what we need more than anything? It’s not training, it’s not lessons in confidence, or workshops on executive presence. We need the people already in power (often cis, straight, white men) to be our SPONSORS. Speak up for us when we’re not in the room. Give us credit because sometimes your voice is more palatable than ours. And coach us on navigating the rough seas while ACKNOWLEDGING we face more (and/or different) hurdles and biases than you did in your path to where you are. You know who does this better than almost anyone I know? Jeff Galas Again - our time together was brief, but his advocacy and support when I was beyond frustrated was one of the most powerful lessons in leadership I’ve ever witnessed. So as we go into this week, I have a message for all the cis, straight, white men in power and positions of leadership: use your voice to sponsor those you believe in - loudly.
