"You cannot tax your way to prosperity" kind of says it all. Entrepreneurs give up stable jobs, time with family, and physical/mental/spiritual well-being (IYKYK) to build - because they are passionate about creating products that improve lives, create jobs, develop talent, generate revenue, and ultimately drive Canadian prosperity. The changes to capital gains inclusion rates will disincentivize entrepreneurs from building here in Canada, and this will have impacts, even in the short-term, that will damage our country. Note that several US states, including Texas and its tech hub Austin, do not have capital gains tax. We've seen the immediate and long-lasting impact that successful exits can have on our ecosystems - exited teams start new companies, become angel investors and philanthropists, and they often choose to do it here because Canada was a good place to build it the first time around. Consider doing some research and consider joining me in signing CCI's petition to ask the Federal government to reconsider this policy in light of the potentially disastrous impacts in both the long and short term on Canada's innovation and technology ecosystem.

Starting a business is already a rollercoaster—full of challenges and risks. Policies like these add to the burden, making it tougher for the next generation to even consider entrepreneurship as a viable path. Our annual report is out! Highlights include: ->Assisting 81 very early stage entrepreneurial starters through our 1:1 startup support services, delivered both in English and Spanish. 57% of entrepreneurs served through this work identified as women, and 47% as BIPOC. Through this completely free support, 10 entrepreneurs launched new businesses this year, creating 16 new jobs in the community. ->Hosting 74.5 hours of free or very low cost early stage business education. ->Graduating 26 entrepreneurs from CO.STARTERS business education cohorts, an intensive 10 week process to go from idea to next actionable steps. Graduates of this program maintain an 89% 1-year startup survival rate, have created 34 local jobs, and raised $875K in capital this year alone. -> Adding 19 new members to our vibrant coworking community. ->Increasing the visibility of 33 local businesses through our storytelling work.

A new twist: The Gathering Spot community claps back with their demands for a seat at the table! The stark contrast between the rhetoric and reality of Greenwood is laid bare in this statement from the community. Greenwood's very name and mission pays homage to the days of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where a community bustling with Black-owned businesses truly thrived. However, in this moment, Greenwood has utterly failed to live up to the mission. A sobering reality: Investors get a seat at the table. Along with a check comes control. And when you raise a whopping $90M and your cap table of investors is stacked with large white-led banks, those investors will designate board members from within their institutions. And those board members will recommend executives for C-Suite positions from within their networks. And those C-Suite executives will hire vendors from within their networks. This is why it's so important to support the movement towards diversifying cap tables (shout out to Nina Ohiku at Cap Table Coalition). A grassroots push: Money doesn't just flow from the top down. The paying members of TGS and customers of Greenwood can vote with their feet, cancel memberships /accounts and walk away. In this community statement, they make their demands clear. Bottom line: Greenwood should do some soul-searching and figure out how to give the community it serves, a real seat at the boardroom table.
