📢📢📢 Attention all WhatsApp users! 📢📢📢 Meta’s WhatsApp has a privacy issue that leaks victim devices’ setup information to any user, even if blocked and not in contact. This information includes the mobile device and up to 4 linked devices. Monitoring this information over time allows potential attackers to gather actionable intelligence about their victim’s device setup and its changes (device replaced/added/removed). 😱 WhatsApp’s End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) protocol is the cornerstone of protecting the confidentiality of its users’ messages. However, WhatsApp E2EE protocol design suffers from some privacy issues. Specifically, WhatsApp exposes, by design, some information about the devices its users use to any platform user. It does not provide any controls, settings, or configuration to allow users to control this exposure (even blocking a user does not solve it). 😔 What can you do about it? Unfortunately, there is no direct way to prevent this information leakage. However, you can take some precautions to protect your privacy. For instance, avoid sharing sensitive information on WhatsApp, use a strong password, and enable two-factor authentication. 🔒

It's not perfect... but it's a start. What do you make of these new changes to Signal's privacy policy? Recently Signal launched the rollout in beta of a long-awaited set of features it's describing simply as “phone number privacy.” Those features, which WIRED has tested, are designed to allow users to conceal their phone numbers as they communicate on the app and instead share a username as a less-sensitive method of connecting with one another. Signal has made three changes. First, by default, your phone number will no longer be visible in your Signal profile unless someone already has the number saved in their phone's address book. Second, you can now choose to create and share a unique username, or a QR code that contains it, with anyone you want to connect with. Third, Signal allows you to turn off not just your number's visibility but its discoverability. "While this doesn't satisfy the most die-hard privacy advocates, it represents a significant improvement for a much larger portion of Signal's hundreds of millions of users." Matthew Green, a cryptography and computer science professor at Johns Hopkins notes, “There’s a legitimate community of people who wanted to use Signal without giving other people their phone numbers, and they’re going to be very happy with this change. And then there's a more hardcore set of people who don’t want to ever give their number to Signal,” Green says. “I think getting a big set of people serviced is the right direction, and working on satisfying all the other people is something for Signal to keep working on.” https://lnkd.in/gHpeyV5x #SignalPrivacy #DataPrivacy #DataProtection #iphone #technology #PrivacyMatters

Nothing Chats, a chat app developed by Android manufacturer "Nothing" in collaboration with Sunbird, claimed to have cracked Apple's iMessage for Android users. What seemed like a novel move quickly turned into a privacy nightmare. Despite widespread security concerns and warnings from experts, the app boldly launched only to face immediate criticism for a slew of security issues. Nothing Chats, essentially a reskin of Sunbird, failed to deliver the promised security features, leading to its removal from the Play Store within a mere 24 hours. The security flaws uncovered were alarming, ranging from the absence of end-to-end encryption to the unsafe storage of messages in plain text. Authentication tokens were found to be sent over unencrypted HTTP, leaving user data susceptible to interception. Investigations by 9to5Google and Text.com exposed vulnerabilities, allowing access to messages before users could read them and intercepting authentication tokens. Text.com even released a proof-of-concept app, demonstrating the exposure of supposedly encrypted messages, urging users to take immediate action by changing their Apple passwords. Nothing's credibility took a severe hit as its security promises were questioned, and the app was dubbed a "privacy nightmare" by a 9to5Google investigator. Sunbird, strangely quiet during the controversy, initially defended its use of unencrypted HTTP, revealing a concerning lack of awareness of modern security practices. The collaboration between Nothing and Sunbird faced strong criticism for negligence, shedding light on a systemic security failure across both companies. Despite assurances that the app would return after fixing bugs, doubts linger about the ability to swiftly address fundamental security concerns. This incident has sparked serious questions about user trust in the app, especially if it were to make a comeback on the Play Store. The safety of entering credentials remains a significant concern, leaving users skeptical about the app's future. #NothingChats #PrivacyNightmare #SecurityScandal #AppSecurity #UserTrust #DataPrivacy #TechNews https://lnkd.in/ebgtnsDT
