Ethics in research is a topic I hold close to my heart. It's not just a chapter to be skimmed in a textbook; it's a guiding principle that shapes every decision. Ensuring privacy, gaining informed consent, and respecting participants' rights have been paramount in my doctoral work, especially in today's digital age where boundaries can easily blur. 🛡️📚 #ScholarSaturday #LennaLearns

🚨 NEWS 🚨 Breaches of publication ethics, unreliable methods... see what else a Digital Science investigation discovered about research papers used in a high-profile abortion drug case in the United States. The investigation has been led by our Vice-President Research Integrity, Dr Leslie McIntosh, who says: "If the court system utilizes scholarly articles to establish scientific truths, then it relies on a system that may be vulnerable to influence by stakeholders who aim to advance their agendas rather than advancing impartial science. "This issue highlights that more must be done to detect and prevent the manipulation or misuse of science and conflicts of interest in the courts." Dr McIntosh has co-authored a post with Elizabeth Smee, Product Solution Specialist, Dimensions and Altmetric, detailing their study of 11 papers used in the US court - including two papers that have recently been retracted by Sage Publishing. Due to a steady increase in the need for non-medical ethical decisions, a new Ethics Commission subcommittee was established to evaluate the technical and societal conditions relevant to research initiatives. One in six decisions relate to topics such as human-machine-interactions, #artificialintelligence, data protection, personality rights and #foodtechnology. Brigitte Poppenberger and Heinz Bernhardt, two professors from TUM School of Life Sciences, are also members of the new #ethicscommittee. ➡ go.tum.de/268868 #tumls #schooloflifesciences #ethics #ai Image: A.
