Next week, at the IHEEM Healthcare Estates Conference, Lianne Knotts will present, ‘Reuse or replace: Reviving an aging NHS estate’. It is well documented that the NHS is facing an aging estate and increasing levels of backlog maintenance. The question then remains, should we look to build new and replace, or can we reuse and update? Lianne will explore the importance of strategic estate planning in finding the answer to this question, setting a clear vision for the future of the NHS estate. She will describe our approach and how it provides a structured framework for informed decision making, based on analysis of the existing estate and an understanding of the various drivers for change. She will draw upon recent project examples which show the value that can be achieved through a strategic approach, where the outcomes have ranged from new build facilities to full refurbishment of existing spaces. Next Week, at the European Healthcare Design Conference, Bob Wills will be joined by Mark Barry from Architype to present, “Passivhaus community healthcare: Lifetime operational savings for no additional cost”. The talk will focus on the Cavell Community Health and Wellbeing Hub, a facility which sets a bold new vision for the delivery of community health services, integrating clinical and social care models to address the broad influences of health and wellbeing. Following on from Medical Architecture’s work with NHS England to envisage the future of integrated community healthcare facilities, the building is one of six pilot schemes for its Cavell Centre community hub programme. Developed in collaboration between Medical Architecture and Architype, the building adopts a pioneering approach to sustainable design, as the only pilot project to be designed to Passivhaus standards. Critically, this can be achieved for no additional cost, whilst enabling around a two-thirds reduction in operational energy and operational carbon compared to a typical new build facility. This equates to energy savings of around £291,000 a year. SALUS Global Knowledge Exchange | #architecture #healthcaredesign #EHD24

Exciting developments are unfolding in Phoenix, with major projects set to shape the city's landscape in 2024 🌆🚀 A significant highlight is the progress of the semiconductor plant, slated to commence production of four-nanometer chips in early 2025. The massive construction effort, involving around 12,000 workers, is guided by a framework ensuring workplace safety, training and effective communication, reflecting a collaborative effort between TSMC and union leadership. ASU Core Research Facilities is playing a pivotal role in this endeavor, partnering with TSMC to provide specialized equipment for semiconductor fabrication at both the Eyring Materials Center and the MacroTechnology Works, one of the largest university-based microelectronics R&D facilities in the nation. This collaboration underscores ASU's commitment to supporting advancements in semiconductor technology. Additionally, the anticipation is building for the opening of ASU's medical school, a significant expansion of the university's health offerings in downtown Phoenix. While the exact location is yet to be confirmed, discussions around the Mercado site on Fifth and Van Buren streets suggest its inclusion in ASU's plans to expand the "healthcare core." The medical school represents a crucial addition to Phoenix's healthcare landscape, with ASU continuing to own the site as per an amended agreement with the City Council. As these projects unfold, 2024 becomes a pivotal year where Phoenix's skyline transforms not just physically but also economically and academically. The collaborative efforts and strategic investments align with the city's vision for a dynamic and prosperous future 🏗️💼. Helsinki Orchid is a concept that challenges pre-existing notions regarding the role of hospitals 🏥 The concept by K2S Architects won the competition organised by the City of Espoo and the Finnish Association of Architects. The goal of the competition was to find a design for a hospital that promotes health rather than just treating diseases. According to the panel of judges, Orchid was “a centre of vitality and wellbeing without a trace of institutional feeling”. The aim is to not only offer hospital care for the patients but also other services generating well-being for the customers and people living in the vicinity. The award-winning design offers ideal conditions for both those who are healing and those providing the healing. This is showcased for example by the design of the hospital wards: 🌼 They differ according to their functions, but the similar design and consistent facility solutions enable smooth passage for healthcare professionals between wards. 🌼 The wards are designed with both patient mobility and practicality in mind, with the patient rooms designed more for hotel-like overnight sleeping than for constant bed rest. Other themes at the core of the design are multifunctionality, mobility, and multidisciplinary care. Look more into the specs of Helsinki Orchid here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/d2tUV4ZV IHDA alliance member included in the project is K2S Architects. IHDA alliance team includes also AINS Group (A-Insinöörit), AW2 Architects – part of AINS Group, Vison Oy, Granlund, Nordic Healthcare Group and Raami Arkkitehdit Oy. #hospitaldesign #healthcaredesign #rethinkingthehospital
