Today, we are reflecting the remarkable legacy of Mr. Charles Frazier who passed away peacefully on April 20, 2024. On December 14, 1998, the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee (CFMT) established the Tapping Individual Potential (TIP) program, a scholarship initiative designed to nurture the extraordinary talents of rising fifth through eighth-grade Metro Nashville Public Schools’ students. These students, often limited by financial or other circumstances, have found opportunities to explore their skills thanks to the visionary efforts of Mr. Frazier, the program’s founder. “Mr. Frazier believed in an excellent education for all children and he had a vision to create opportunities to learn and develop their potential regardless of financial limitations or background,” said Pat Cole, former CFMT Scholarship Coordinator. “He participated in the Tapping Individual Potential program until 2021. He was a strong advocate for public education and a champion for all students regardless of their abilities or circumstances.” Learn more about Mr. Frazier and his impact through TIP >> https://lnkd.in/eudDFKTV

It's a regrettable step back that the University of Florida has decided to terminate all DEI positions. Our nation is in the throes of intense polarization, we need actions that bridge gaps, not widen them. We see people of color grappling with an unequal playing field when it comes to access to capital, education, and job opportunities. And this incident serves as a stark reminder about the urgency to bolster our community. This situation strongly underscores the obligation we have to fortify our community by rallying behind our local Black-Owned companies. The moment has arrived for us to pool our resources into our people, our communities and our businesses. At SoFlo Black Pages, we firmly believe in educating and sharing data-driven content that propels our community forward. It's time we take control of our narratives and fuel our own community and businesses with well-deserved resources and support. It’s more than just information, it’s about concrete steps and workable strategies to grow. #supportdei #supportdiversityequityandinclusion #blackowned #blackownedbusinesses #supportblackbusinesses #supportourcommunity #sofloblackpages #shopblackownedbusinesses https://vist.ly/37mvr

This story is so powerful.
Barbara Johnson is often asked why she and her husband chose to live in the middle of a college campus. “They didn’t know we were here before the college,” she said. In the post-World War II period, Black neighborhoods across the country were confiscated and destroyed for higher-education facilities. Here's how it happened:

“Despite only representing 3% of all four-year institutions, [HBCUs] graduate 17% of all bachelor’s degrees and 24% of all STEM-related bachelor’s degrees for Black students, enrolling ‘more than twice as many Pell Grant-eligible students as non-HBCUs.’ Charging tuition rates that are on average nearly 30% less than at comparable non-HBCUs, these schools are among the best return on our nation’s post-secondary education investments. However, HBCUs have historically been underfunded and continue to be.” Writing for Diverse: Issues In Higher Education, Thurgood Marshall College Fund president and CEO, Dr. Harry L. Williams, describes how investing in HBCUs can help increase higher education enrollment among Black students: https://lnkd.in/e8-qsAfB

For many years now, I’ve noticed that working to improve, invest in, or (oddly) defend public education brings out the best in people. It’s a never-ending, ever-widening labor of love for young people, communities, and the idea of a functioning, or better yet, a vibrant democracy. Sometimes it’s hard to see an immediate, real-world impact, especially if you don’t work in the classroom or regularly visit schools (miss the good old days). But whether it's educators inspiring students and anchoring communities, advocates making sure the system works for everyone, or innovators of all types bringing new ideas forward, supporting the promise of a great education can be our best and most tangible expression of compassion, justice, and hope for the future. And I don’t think there’s ever been a time when we’ve needed more of that collective, teetering on existential, hope. I feel incredibly lucky to still be fighting the good fight, now with the brilliant team of education dreamers, believers, and storytellers at FINN Partners—a few months in already. Together, we’re showing that when we work in service of education from the many vantage points and undertakings our clients bring, we elevate not only educational progress and ideas but also each other. Stay hopeful, friends.
Julian Vinocur joins FINN Partners’ education team as a vice president leading work with a variety of higher education, K-12 curriculum and crisis clients. Julian’s career spans positions from the Alliance for Public Education to NYC Public Schools and the Fund for Public Schools, as well as the Association of College and University Educators and TNTP. Throughout his career, his work has centered on telling stories that establish the brand and authority of public education as a pillar of opportunity and democratic ideals. He has worked on various public-private partnerships to support the needs of educators and students in communities across NYC and the U.S.

States like Texas and North Carolina are dismantling DEI programs, impacting college admissions and funding for Black high school graduates. This shift in policy could limit opportunities for under-represented students, potentially affecting their college choices and financial aid. The University of Texas at Austin and Duke University have already seen changes, with Texas eliminating DEI offices and Duke replacing a full-ride scholarship for students of African descent. This raises concerns about the future of diversity and inclusion in higher education. Read the story: https://bit.ly/44R3drS

1moSaluting Charles Frazier on a life incredibly well-lived! My thoughts and prayers are sent to his family, as I fondly remember Mr Frazier as my father’s boss and mentor. My Dad often commented on Mr Frazier’s steady, fair, and “do the right thing” leadership style. MNPS was fortunate to have him as a leader, and he will be sorely missed.
