🧐Did you know that black people have been enslaved in the United States longer than we have been free? #ChangePolicy From the time of the first African slaves arriving in Virginia in 1619 until the abolishment of chattel slavery in 1865 which is 346 years, black people in America endured centuries of forced labor, exploitation, and dehumanization. Despite the official end of slavery, the legacy of this horrific institution continues to impact African Americans today. The call for reparations for the American Descendants of Slaves (ADOS) is justified by the historical evidence of failed policies that have disproportionately harmed the black community. The effects of slavery, Jim Crow laws, segregation, and systemic racism have created a wealth gap between white Americans and black Americans that persists to this day. This gap is evident in every aspect of American society, from housing to healthcare to education to criminal justice to environmental policies. As we move into the holidays, let's take a moment to remember and acknowledge the deep and complex histories of the land we stand on and the people who have shaped it. Originally, these lands were the traditional birthright of Indigenous peoples. Forcibly dispossessed of their homes, they have endured centuries-long struggles to preserve their cultural identities and livelihoods. They are still here, resilient and strong. Let's take action and support local Indigenous organizations as a way of acknowledging their enduring presence and contributions. We must also recognize the significant contributions and presence of Black communities. Brought involuntarily through the institution of slavery, they have continuously faced systemic inequities and discrimination. Their resilience, culture, and labor have been integral to the development and identity of this land. Understanding this complex history is our responsibility. It guides our actions today and shapes our future. In doing so, we show our respect and commitment to all who have contributed to this land. Our goal is to honor, preserve, and learn from their legacies, ensuring their struggles and triumphs are not forgotten but are an integral part of our collective memory and future.
