👏🏾Fund operations! Let teams focus in programming instead of bending to the whims of the few funders that are open to supporting general operations. AND if you do grant program dollars, explicitly increase the portion of the gift set to cover general expenses. Typically I see 15%, go up to 40%! Give it a try 🤩

Over the past 15 years, employment in the nonprofit sector has grown 33%, compared to 9% job growth in the for-profit private sector. Nonprofits have passed local government to become the second-largest source of employment in the country. In Pinellas County, more than 7% of all workers are employed at nonprofits. Despite this employment growth, local nonprofit leaders say they’re still struggling to keep up with community need. The pandemic exacerbated challenges like hunger and housing shortages, and as governmental programs face funding shortages and budget cuts, nonprofits step in to pick up the slack. #philanthropy #donors #grants #nonprofitorganization
Every person in the United States benefits from the work of nonprofits in one way or another, whether they realize it or not. As America’s governmental and social institutions change, nonprofits are playing a larger role than ever in our daily lives.

Good intentions can only go so far. Local nonprofits and government-funded agencies can unintentionally contribute to systems of harm by creating power imbalances, crowding out local services, mismanaging resources, overlooking risks, and lacking coordination with local stakeholders. To avoid these issues, they should engage in inclusive, context-aware practices and collaborate closely with local communities. San Francisco is home to a large variety of non-profits, agencies, offices, and departments with their own unique cultures and values. All 30,722 of them seem to be uniformly aligned in focusing on “marginalized people”. Do you ever wonder why, in a city that boasts tolerance and inclusivity as well as a variety of resources, there are still so many people suffering? Is anyone collecting data on the level of success or effectiveness these efforts are having? Do you notice any patterns? https://lnkd.in/gDEEB8m3 #inclusion #equity #collaboration #communityengagement #beyondblackandwhite

This is what I've been talking about, to anyone who will listen: "When nonprofits cannot hire enough employees to provide vital services, the public suffers. Data from this survey and others show that along with increased demands for services, there are longer waiting lists, reduced services, and sometimes elimination of services. When any of those happen, the ripple effects cannot be ignored: communities lose access to food, shelter, mental health care, and other vital services on which people depend." At Leadership Council for Nonprofits, we hope to find partners, especially funders, who we can work with on solutions identified in this new report. What do YOU think can be done??

CEP's recent report on the state of nonprofits in 2023 found that there was greater trust between nonprofits and their funders, as well as that nonprofits were experiencing significant staffing challenges - including issues related to burnout - but a more hopeful economic outlook than many feared.
