“After a 29-year career with the FBI, I wasn’t thinking of working for the Church Security Department (CSD) as a second career. “I had dragged my wife and four children around the world on different assignments as well as spending many days and nights away from home, and I felt it was time to settle down in Arizona, where my wife and I are originally from. “However, after some recruitment by Church Security Department managers and directors whom I knew and trusted, coupled with hours of fasting and prayer, I knew that working with CSD was going to be my next phase of life. “I have found the Church Security Department to be a highly professional security organization with skilled and dedicated officers and managers. I have often said that I could match CSD up against most law enforcement agencies I worked with in my prior career in terms of capability and professionalism. “To be a part of an organization whose goal is to provide a peaceful and secure environment in which the mission of the Church may be accomplished has been very rewarding. “I never thought anything could equal the satisfaction and camaraderie I experienced in the FBI. However, my time in CSD has done just that. … “I am married … and we have four children and six grandchildren. Our family is the joy of our lives, and we love spending time with them. On March 21, 2024, the National Hospital of Cojutepeque in El Salvador received a donation of five stationary incubators, three transport incubators, and three thermal cribs from the Church of Jesus Christ. “Jesus Christ healed and healed many, and these actions of love became miracles, like [in] El Salvador. “With this new equipment, the little ones will be blessed with better attention and care, and, without a doubt, there will be miracles in the lives of many newborns,” said Carlos Ayala, an ecclesiastical leader. ✈️ “As a fighter pilot and airline captain, I learned that while I could not choose the adversity I would encounter during a flight, I could choose how I prepared and how I reacted. What is needed during times of crisis is calm and clear-headed trust. “How do we do this? “We face the facts and return to the fundamentals, to the basic gospel principles, to what matters most. … “Focus on the things you can do and not on the things you cannot do” (Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, general conference, Oct. 2020). Focusing on what we can control allows us to put our limited time, energy, and resources toward things that bring us joy. Faith in Jesus Christ will enable us to let go of what we can’t control and trust that He will guide us no matter what happens. “Deciding to leave my career in Germany and start anew in the United States was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever made. “When I arrived, I thought it would be easy to find footing, but after a couple of months passed, I found myself feeling confused as to why no one would respond to my applications.” For Donata, everything changed when she connected with a career coach. She said: “This career coach [Sister Medler] helped me not only polish my resume but also conducted mock interviews and offered tailored advice for navigating the American job market. All on a volunteer basis. I learned so much from her! “Additionally, she recommended I attend the daily meetings of the Active Job Search (AJS) Group of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I’m so glad I did! “They [the Active Job Search Group] provided a supportive community of volunteers who shared invaluable insights and encouragement with me when I felt at my lowest. “A crucial lesson I learned was the importance of seeking help and networking with professionals. By scheduling informational meetings with experienced individuals, I gained confidence in interacting with strangers. One of these informational interviews eventually led me to my current role. “The AJS Group, comprising seasoned career coaches with extensive industry experience, played a pivotal role in my journey. Their recommendations and networking opportunities were instrumental in landing my job. I’m grateful for their support. “This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of a nurturing community. I not only transitioned my career successfully to the US but found peace and comfort in knowing that God provided me with so many loving people that I can finally feel at home.” - Donata W.
