Demystifying Community Housing promises to be a great series providing insight on the value of community housing and forward direction that could be taken regarding Canada’s #housingcrisis
Today, we’re launching a new series of the Policy Options podcast: Demystifying Community Housing! This special collaborative series between the IRPP and the Urban Studies Program and the SFU School of Public Policy will highlight the work of the individuals who have spent their careers in the community and non-profit housing sectors and will consider how the sector can help to solve Canada’s ongoing housing crisis. In this first episode of the series, co-hosts Hanan Ali and Natasha Mhuriro sit down with three experts in the community housing sector: Rebecca Schiff, Dean of the Faculty of Human Health Sciences at UNBC - University of Northern British Columbia; Ray Sullivan, the Executive Director at the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association; and David Hulchanski, a Professor in the Faculty of Social Work and at the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto. Together, our hosts and their guests discuss what community housing means, who it serves — or should serve — and how to pave the path forward for resilient community housing. https://lnkd.in/gKS_9mKe

Lots of folks are stuck in a tough spot where the money they make just doesn't match up with how much housing costs. In Cincinnati, there's a shortage of over 28,000 affordable housing units, and it's hitting hard. What's even more surprising is that at least 54% of households earning less than $30,000 a year are shelling out more than half of their income for housing. Affordable housing is the foundation of a thriving community. In Cincinnati access to affordable homes ensures that everyone has a fair shot at a brighter future. Let's advocate for affordable housing to foster a community where everyone can live, work, and grow together. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/g3PkJH_4

The most-read story from the previous week's Developer's Digest®, published by New York YIMBY, reports that Mayor Eric Adams has introduced a zoning proposal aimed at facilitating the construction of affordable housing by faith-based organizations and nonprofits in New York City. This initiative, part of the "City of Yes for Housing Opportunity" plan, aims to address the city's housing crisis by removing outdated zoning laws, allowing organizations to convert unused properties into affordable housing units. The proposal aligns with efforts to tackle New York's housing challenges and is expected to undergo public review before a vote by the City Council later this year. State Senator Andrew Gounardes has praised the initiative, highlighting its potential to benefit vulnerable communities while ensuring financial stability for religious institutions. Today, we mourn the profound loss of public libraries in the UK, an institution that has long stood as a beacon of knowledge, community, and opportunity. Public libraries were not merely repositories of books; they were the heart of our towns and cities, providing a safe haven for learning, exploration, and growth. For generations, libraries offered a place where anyone, regardless of background or circumstance, could access the wealth of human knowledge. They were sanctuaries for students, refuges for those seeking information, and communal spaces where people could connect over shared interests and pursuits. The closure of our public libraries marks the end of an era. It is a loss driven not by the hands of dictators but by the decisions of those seeking political gain, sacrificing these invaluable community assets in the name of budget cuts and short-term wins. We lose not only access to books but also the spirit of inclusivity and lifelong learning that libraries embodied. As we say goodbye, let us remember the joy and growth that libraries brought to our lives and communities. Let us also commit to honoring their legacy by advocating for accessible knowledge and community resources in every way we can. Earlier this month, the Bellevue City Council decided to pursue a new, more ambitious affordable housing target in the coming years. The proposed 10-year target, to be revisited in the fall following community outreach and additional analysis, aims to produce or preserve 5,700 housing units. The new affordable housing target is based on Bellevue’s 2022 Housing Needs Assessment gap analysis. According to the City: "A new affordable housing target will help the city keep pace with expected growth projections established in the Comprehensive Plan Update now being developed and will advance the goals of the Affordable Housing Strategy. City plans include furthering partnerships and adding more tools and methods to increase affordable housing production and preservation in the coming years, which will be key to attaining the new target."
