Having worked many years in building quality control, I found the most successful route to improving quality was through positive engagement with trades people at the work face. Trades people are only human who make mistakes. Without mistakes, we cannot learn. I learnt that trades people despise the bureaucracy of forms forced down on them by management. I listened to their point of view and challenges, and adapted forms to suit each unique case. I found there was an inherent interest to broaden their own trade knowledge, but also learn how their portion of work is vitality important and integrated into the bigger scheme of the project. I was there to teach, and explain what quality means and why it matters. I aligned the team's perspective with the project deliverables, which in turn improved quality. I taught teams to step back, plan ahead, and bring the right attitude and tools for the job. A little bit of time-out from the mundane and repetitive work to discuss project specifications and testing requirements gave the team's clear objectives. Construction work is strenuous, hazardous, and happens under pressurised deadlines, factors that all work against quality. Quality Control should not be used as a punitive mechanism, but should rather play a supporting role at the work face.
