The Twin Rivers development had 218 units of affordable housing. How many units of affordable housing will be available in Mirasol Village? How do the rents compare for the affordable housing units? It seems with the growth in homelessness the criteria for success at Mirasol should be a growth in affordable units that at least equals the growth in homelessness in the community--based on the homeless count that growth is over 40%.

We have heard of people giving land back to the Aboriginal movement in Australia. There’s a time when things change in the world. There is consciousness that is built. And it kind of takes off from there." At BLIS, we are committed to growing and supporting the movements for reparations, Land Back, and other transformative social movements. We believe in the power of collective action, narrative change, and the crucial role each individual's contributions play in these larger efforts. However, we recognize that movement participation must go beyond just belief in the movement -- it demands active engagement. This year, we are conducting research to understand the barriers to achieving what we call "Ocean Deep" solidarity and active engagement in transformative movements. In 2019, Heritage Fund launched the Areas of Focus initiative, aimed at supporting regions with significant heritage potential that had historically received less funding. As this five-year commitment comes to an end in 2024, we created three videos for them focused on Newham, Enfield and Brent to celebrate the achievements and partnerships that have emerged. These videos were be showcased at celebratory events organised by the Heritage Fund in February and March 2024, featuring key stakeholders and grantees who have benefited from their support. Project Goals: * Highlighting Achievements: Showcasing the work and partnerships in each Area of Focus. * Community Engagement: Bringing heritage to life through the perspectives of grantees. * Versatile Content: Using a mixture of existing footage and new interviews to create impactful videos.

If you've been to France in the last couple of decades, you may have spotted those little brown 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de France' roadsigns, directing you to over 130 of France's most beautiful villages. It's a hotly contested award and a great bit of place promotion that (according to the national bureau that administers it) boosts visitor numbers by up to 50%. I was thinking about how the adoption of a similar scheme would go in the UK. Our governance system would hinder I suspect - the communes system in France is similar to the Parish system but with more clout. With an elected mayor, Communes seem to be able to achieve more than Parishes can, hence the sheer number of working floral clocks you see on French roundabouts. Also, although we undoubtedly have at least 130 beautiful villages, why villages? Places like Lacock and Bourton-on-the-Water are overrun with tourists in the summer and it can't be fun for those that live there, who can buy endless fudge but not a pint of milk. Better surely to aim for towns which have better infrastructure to cope with visitors and more capacity to adapt. I still think a similar idea in the UK could work though, particularly as a way to raise money to preserve heritage and bring back unused buildings. Yesterday I wrote a post about focusing on developing community assets and enterprises within Grimsby. But what does this mean? It refers to a strategic approach aimed at building and enhancing resources and businesses that are of value to the local community. This can include a range of projects and initiatives: 1. Community Assets: These are properties or spaces that are owned or managed by community organisations for public benefit. Examples include community centres, parks, libraries, and sports facilities. Developing these assets means improving, expanding, or creating new spaces that serve the community's needs and interests. 2. Community Enterprises: These are businesses that are set up, owned, and run by the local community. They often reinvest profits back into the community. Examples can include local co-operatives, social enterprises, and community-run shops or cafes. Developing these enterprises means supporting the growth of businesses that not only serve the local economy but also contribute to the social and communal well-being of Grimsby. The focus on these areas implies that initiatives and investments in Grimsby should prioritise projects that bring tangible benefits to the community, boost the local economy, and enhance the quality of life for its residents. This is happening a lot in Grimsby but not everyone is aware of these brilliant community organisations. I am joining one of these organisations next Tuesday at an event they have organised "Our Future Open House 2023" in collaboration with East Marsh United I attended last year and came away inspired and humbled. Have you ever considered the profound impact of preserving history for future generations? 🕰️ As a passionate Rotarian and the Grant Chair for my club, I've been deeply involved in a project that's close to my heart. We're on a mission to help the Elizabethtown Historical Society with much-needed repairs to their building—a cornerstone of our community's heritage. The wear and tear of time don't just affect us individually; they also touch the places that hold our collective memories. The Elizabethtown Historical Society has been a custodian of our past, but now it's our turn to ensure its future. Writing a district grant proposal is more than just a formal request for funds. It's a narrative that weaves together the importance of history, the urgency of preservation, and the community's role in safeguarding our shared stories. Here are some key points I'm considering for the proposal: 1. The significance of the historical society to our community. 2. The specific repairs needed and their costs. 3. The long-term benefits of preserving the building for educational and cultural enrichment. I believe that by supporting these repairs, we're not just fixing a structure; we're restoring a treasure trove of knowledge and a beacon for community engagement.
