Reflecting on the past, I found my old Navy ID card, which stirred waves of nostalgia.
Reminding me of the discipline, camaraderie, and resilience instilled through military service. As discussion about the new veterans card mounts online, it's a poignant reminder of the evolution in the recognition and respect we afford to our veterans.
In the current socio-political climate, the suggestion of training citizens for warfare, as put forth by Gen Sanders, has raised eyebrows.
Military service is more than just skill acquisition, it's about dedication, discipline, and duty - qualities that cannot be transplanted.
While I respect General Sanders' perspective that "armed citizens still win modern wars", I believe that professionals should be engaged for this purpose, trained not just in warfare, but in upholding the ethos of honour, courage, and commitment.
As a proud former Royal Marine, I stand against the idea of training citizens for warfare.
Is the answer really in “training and equipping” a new citizen army or do we need to re-think our approach to national security and defence?
I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
