Meta introduces Nougat (Neural Optical Understanding for Academic Documents), a Visual Transformer model that performs an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) task for processing scientific documents into a markup language, and demonstrates the effectiveness of the model on a new dataset of scientific documents. The introduced approach offers a promising solution to enhance the accessibility of scientific knowledge in the digital age, by bridging the gap between human-readable documents and machine-readable text. Founder & Creative Director at almst | Bridging Brands and Customers through Immersive Storytelling.
It's always humbling to revisit your work. Our project for AK-OK was completed in our first year, bringing back many of the learnings we had in Year 1. The most important lesson is always being open to trying out new ideas, experimenting, and being resilient. As we enter Year 3, it's crucial to apply these learnings to our work. 💪 https://lnkd.in/drqNd8bU

Those of us living in Aotearoa New Zealand know our country is about connections - to people and the natural environment. 🌏 Here’s an excellent guide for non-Māori (Pākehā and tauiwi) on the how and why of a pepeha. It includes explanations and a great (easy and short) template. Let’s get going! https://lnkd.in/gNCKuEPv

Our latest research explores social media analysis of Johor Bahru visitors' experiences and motivations for exploring historic buildings in the context of the digital age. This data mining study examines tourists’ experiences and motivations for visiting Johor Bahru's heritage buildings of 2,369 Google Review and Tripadvisor comments using web crawlers scripted in Python. The content analysis identified six themes associated with tourist motivation: activity, accessibility, diversity, attachment, inclusivity, and appearance. Even though their aesthetics are subdued, Johor Bahru's public historic sites thrive on accessibility and active activities, unlike magnificent royal edifices. Despite their architectural value, royal structures attracted fewer tourists due to the absence of diversity, inclusivity, and activities and restrictive measures. Maintaining the city's legacy and architectural identity requires highlighting these buildings. This study accentuates social media-driven popular views. The findings may encourage local authorities and stakeholders to strengthen Johor Bahru's identity and promote heritage tourism. 🎓 I'm happy to share that I have completed my Master's degree in Complex System Engineering and Management at TU Delft | Technology, Policy and Management! 🎓 My final thesis journey has been personal and impactful for me. As someone who has never worked in an academic setting, I often felt out of place, constantly questioning the practical benefits for the community and impact of my work. Talking with people and discussing community issues felt too easy and enjoyable to feel "productive" to me. However, my supervisors were very excited about my research (thank you! Fátima Delgado Medina Jolien Ubacht Els Leclercq Victor Scholten), and my research partner, Bale Bengong (https://balebengong.id/), even put the Barter Market intervention into reality. Maybe I did produce something good? Maybe telling each other’s stories and #connecting different people (east/west, #globalsouth / #globalnorth) is enough? My thesis, titled "Motivating 'Sharing' to Enhance Circular Community in Bali, Indonesia: A Participatory Action Research on Balinese Community," addresses the challenges of declining communal sharing and increasing individualistic behaviors in #Bali. Using the Circular Value Flower (CVF) framework and a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, I worked closely with the local community to co-create a Barter Market intervention as societal sontributions that promotes circularity and community connections. This study made scientific contributions by introducing Balinese community values to the Sharing Motivation Cycle (Ho & Yanagisawa, 2023) and integrating individual values and well-being aspects into the CVF (Smit & Leclercq, 2022). Reflecting on My Thesis Project: 🍏 1. Sustainability and Traditional Practices: My study pointed out (again) that (Balinese) traditional cultural practices inherently promote ecological balance and social well-being, even before "sustainability" was a term. Current sustainability models and strategies should align more with traditional and local practices for a holistic approach to development. ⚖ 2. Epistemic Justice in Climate Change Discussions: During my studies, I often felt disconnected from the climate change discussions, which were predominantly framed around technology and economic consequences. For many Indonesians and Balinese, climate change is more of a justice issue, intertwined with power dynamics. I believe circularity shouldn't just mean environmental circularity but also #circularcommunities. To promote #epistemicjustice, #TUDelft and the #CoSEM program could enrich their curriculum by incorporating a range of case studies representing diverse cultural and social viewpoints. I'm excited to apply these insights and skills to new opportunities in sustainability, community development, and beyond. If you know of any opportunities or would like to connect, feel free to reach out!
